Role Description
As part of a growing and agile business, our Environmental Planning team seeks a Principal/Associate Technical Director with proven experience leading environmental and consenting aspects of projects—particularly in the Design and Build (D&B) Sector.
In this role, you will drive impactful work across protected species, pollution, surface water and materials management, air quality, and noise management. Your contributions will safeguard natural ecosystems while addressing challenges like climate change, urbanisation, and biodiversity loss. We aim to protect essential resources and prepare communities for future resilience.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Leadership Across Diverse Projects
- Manage a wide range of large-scale projects, including:
- Energy and infrastructure
- Rail, highways, and water
- Mixed-use and public realm development
- Masterplanning schemes
- Smaller-scale initiatives requiring agility
- Champion technical excellence, digital innovation, and collaboration while delivering multidisciplinary projects across the UK and globally. Act as a strategic leader in driving project outcomes.

Environmental Planning & Compliance
- Oversee planning and environmental components with proficiency in Design and Build delivery.
- Foster optimal environmental and planning outcomes through contributions to project development.

Business Development & Client Engagement
- Develop a strong pipeline for Design and Build sector opportunities alongside upstream environmental and planning initiatives.
- Responsible for:
- Winning new business to expand Arcadis’s portfolio
- Endorsing cross-selling to our broader team
- Engaging and maintaining key client relationships
- Raising awareness of services via networking with new stakeholders

Consultee & Stakeholder Management
- Facilitate collaboration with authorities, regulators, and stakeholders.

Project Leadership
- Manage performance, technical quality, commercial goals, and health & safety across teams.
- Foster working relationships with colleagues within Arcadis’s Global Business Framework.
Qualifications & Experience Requirements
To thrive in this role, you will need:

Specialist Technical & Commercial Acumen
- In-depth knowledge of environmental and consenting processes, EIA practices, regulations, and case law.
- Deep understanding of sustainability principles and specific technical specialisms (e.g., ecology, emissions modelling).

Industry Expertise
- Proven experience influencing contractors’ sustainability practices through design.
- Relevant experience working on a variety of project types, including D&B schemes.

Soft Skills & Communication Excellence
- Strong report writing, verbal, and presentation skills.
- Ability to review and enhance quality of work produced by multidisciplinary teams.

Leadership & Coordination
- Managed or led large-scale projects collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary environment.
- Experience in consulting with authorities, planning bodies, and negotiating stakeholder expectations.

Commercial Savvy
- Proficiency in forecasting, project management, and quality assurance.

Professional Development
- Relevant degree or equivalent, ideally chartered or on the journey to chartered status.
- Embodying a flexible, problem-solving, and team-oriented approach.
