Environmental Monitoring Manager
Job Introduction
At Tarmac, who you are matters. We are currently looking for an experienced and motivated Environmental Monitoring Manager to join our Land and Natural Resources team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a vital role in ensuring our environmental monitoring activities are delivered to the highest standards across our UK operations.
As the Environmental Monitoring Manager, you will lead a nationally dispersed team of environmental monitoring professionals, overseeing the collection, management and reporting of environmental data. Working closely with operational teams, regulators and specialist contractors, you will ensure monitoring programmes meet planning permissions, environmental permits, operating licences and regulatory requirements, while driving best practice and continuous improvement across the business.
What You'll Be Doing
As Environmental Monitoring Manager, you will provide leadership, technical expertise and strategic oversight for environmental monitoring activities across Tarmac's operations. Key responsibilities will include:
- Leading and developing a team of Environmental Monitoring Technicians and a Data Management Technician, creating a positive, high-performing and safety-focused culture
- Managing the collection, validation and reporting of environmental monitoring data, ensuring information is accurate, complete and recorded within company monitoring systems
- Ensuring environmental reports and regulatory submissions are produced and delivered in line with statutory timescales
- Developing and implementing monitoring programmes that meet operational, permitting and compliance requirements
- Reviewing monitoring protocols and standards to ensure alignment with industry best practice and regulatory guidance
- Managing and auditing external monitoring contractors and laboratory partners to ensure quality, consistency and value for money
- Overseeing the maintenance and performance of monitoring equipment, ensuring compliance with manufacturer recommendations and operational requirements
- Leading the production and submission of annual environmental reports for permitted landfill operations
- Investigating monitoring-related permit non-compliances and coordinating timely corrective actions
- Managing monitoring budgets and ensuring costs are appropriately tracked and allocated
- Maintaining safe systems of work, risk assessments and monitoring procedures that support the highest levels of health, safety and environmental compliance
- Building strong relationships with site managers, operational teams, permitting specialists, regulators, consultants and other key stakeholders to ensure successful environmental outcomes

What We're Looking For
We are looking for a collaborative and technically capable environmental professional who can combine leadership skills with strong analytical thinking and a passion for environmental stewardship.
The ideal candidate will have:
- A degree in an environmental discipline or equivalent technical knowledge of contaminant migration, hydrogeology, hydrology and landfill gas systems
- Chartered membership, or be working towards chartered status, with a relevant professional body
- Significant experience in environmental monitoring, particularly groundwater, surface water and landfill gas monitoring programmes
- Proven experience leading, developing and managing technical teams
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex environmental data, identify trends and proactively address issues
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with a coaching-led leadership approach
- Experience working with environmental databases, Excel and other data management and reporting systems
- Knowledge of environmental permits, planning permissions and regulatory compliance frameworks
- A continuous improvement mindset, with a willingness to embrace innovation, technology and more efficient ways of working
- The ability to prioritise effectively, work under pressure and consistently deliver against deadlines
- A self-motivated, team-oriented approach with a strong commitment to safety, sustainability and operational excellence
