Environmental Planner (Hybrid Work) - Water Sector Infrastructure Project Delivery
Location
Derby or London. Hybrid working available.
Finlay Jude Associates is recruiting an Environmental Planner for a leading UK water sector organisation to support their Enabling team. This role is pivotal in facilitating seamless project progression from early feasibility stages through to construction, harmonising the efforts of design, planning, and management teams.

Purpose of the Role
The Environmental Planner will provide critical environmental and planning strategic advice to shape and deliver water and wastewater infrastructure projects. The role encompasses identifying consenting requirements, managing environmental deliverables, and aligning project timelines with strategic objectives for timely progression.
Key Objectives:
- Ensure environmental and planning compliance integrates seamlessly with project delivery
- Deliver environmental management plans and assessments in line with statutory and client expectations
- Facilitate efficient development through proactive collaboration within the multidisciplinary team
Key Responsibilities
Planning & Environmental Leadership
- Work closely with designers and project managers to articulate environmental and planning requirements throughout the development lifecycle
- Lead the identification of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Town Planning obligations, including coordination of planning applications
- Provide early-stage consenting guidance, including timelines, to construction programme teams

Project Delivery & Coordination
- Oversee the timely completion of environmental studies, surveys, reports, and assessments
- Manage third-party reviews, including Environmental Risk Reviews and planning/environmental consultations
- Support cost inputs relating to environmental and planning requirements
- Maintain liaison with client-side environmental planners and external consultants to streamline EIA screening, wildlife surveys, and requirement submissions
Regulatory & Stakeholder Engagement
- Represent the project in meetings with clients, statutory consultees (e.g., Environment Agency, Natural England), and external stakeholders
- Agree environmentally compliant design solutions acceptable to both technical and regulatory markets
- Develop and support use of GIS assets as required for Environmental Constraints Mapping
- Identify and coordinate Environmental Permitting requirements, including access to specialist consultancy support
- Support all communications with Local Planning Authorities and lead stakeholder relationships
Permitting & Biodiversity Compliance
- Lead preparation for environmental consents, including:
- Environment Agency permits
- Flood Risk Activity Permits
- Ordinary Watercourse Consents
- Hedgerow Removal Notices
- Public Rights of Way diversions
- Tree works permits
- Conservation area notices
- Integrate biodiversity targets into project delivery while balancing client-constraintled timescales

Essential Requirements
- Detailed knowledge of environmental management and consenting processes within infrastructure development
- Excellent written, verbal, and negotiation competencies to engage with stakeholders across sectors
- Strong IT proficiency, including GIS tools where relevant
- Proven ability to prioritise workload and manage multiple complex deliverables efficiently
- Flexible, autonomous approach with proactive initiative to drive outcomes forward
- Goal-setting skills to provide targeted contributions to project plans
- Full UK driving licence (essential for multi-site working and client project involvement)
Desirable Attributes
- Hold a relevant CSCS card
- Hold a qualification in:
- Environmental planning
- Town planning, or a closely related discipline
- Demonstrable experience in environmental project management across infrastructure sectors
