Environmental Sustainability Advisor – Power Transmission & Distribution
About The Role
Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Environmental Sustainability Advisor to join their Power Transmission and Distribution business within the work winning team.
This role offers an established Environmental Sustainability Advisor the chance to develop their career within a team of ES professionals, influencing sustainability considerations early in project development.
The successful candidate will enjoy a flexible working arrangement, including a mix of part-time homeworking and visiting the Derby office to collaborate with the team.
The BBPTD Environmental Sustainability Team fosters collaboration, supportsClient needs, and emphasises hands-on project approaches to manage environmental and sustainability challenges effectively.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Provide advice and support to the wider bid team to ensure projects comply with environmental regulations, BB procedures and client requirements, aligning with the Building New Futures Strategy.
- Support a team of Environmental Sustainability Advisors in strategic bid and tender activities.
- Compile tender and bid responses to aid the wider bid process.
- Draft environmental sustainability documents for on-site ES teams to use during project execution.
- Conduct high-level reviews of:
- Environmental sustainability elements in construction methodologies
- Risk registers
- Price build-ups
- Programmes and other project-specific deliverables
- Report good practices and investigate/analyse environmental incidents, informing both project teams and regulators.
- Participate in lessons learned exercises and suggest improvement opportunities.
- Collaborate with the Head of Sustainability to champion Zero Harm objectives, sustainability strategies and drive continuous performance improvement.
Who We're Looking For
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Qualification: A relevant degree or equivalent in an environmental discipline.
- Legislative Knowledge: Thorough understanding of current environmental legislation and consenting regimes.
- Industry Expertise: Strong working knowledge of the construction sector, preferably in utilities/energy.
- Technical Reading & Translation: Experience deciphering technical documentation and translating it into clear operational terms.
- Environmental Risk Assessment:
- Background in assessing environmental hazards.
- Understanding of mitigation strategies for high-impact projects.
- Biodiversity Net Gain: Awareness and knowledge of the requirements.
- Regulatory Experience: Previous experience dealing with environmental regulators and brownfield development.
- Communication Skills:
- Demonstrated capability in building relationships across all organisational levels.
- Ability to communicate effectively with internal/external stakeholders.
- Experience in reporting across documents and presentations.
- Teamwork: Professional, pragmatic and collaborative attitude, able to build and sustain effective working relationships.
- Business & Commercial Awareness: Strong understanding of contractor relations and subcontractor management.
- Operational Efficiency:
- Experience in programme management, with a structured approach to tracking progress.
- Exceptional attention to detail.
- Logistics: Valid driving licence.
- Industry Interest: Passion for the utilities/construction/engineering operating environment.
- IT Proficiency: Full command of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Desirable Qualifications & Experience
- ** Certification**: IEMA level accreditation or equivalent professional recognition.
- E&S Systems Knowledge: Experience with environmental and sustainability management frameworks.
- GIS Experience: Familiarity with GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS).
- Green Ratings: Experience with standards like CEEQUAL and BREEAMi.
