Environmental Sustainability Manager (East Sussex Highways Contract)

About The Role

Balfour Beatty is seeking an Environmental Sustainability Manager to support the East Sussex Highways Contract. You will align with contractual KPI commitments and manage high-risk environmental compliance onsite.


What You’ll Be Doing

  • Develop and implement Sustainability Management Plans in line with Balfour Beatty’s group strategy, customer expectations, and contract-specific requirements.
  • Lead data capture and reporting via the internal sustainability portal and external platforms as needed.
  • Ensure BMS (Brigadier Motoring Standards) compliance across the contract teams.
  • Educate the team on sustainability-related contract obligations, clarifying how individual roles contribute to broader ambitions.
  • Provide ongoing expertise, coaching, and structured support to contract teams and supply chain partners to recognise risks, seize opportunities, and exceed sustainability targets.
  • Identate awards and promotional opportunities, including producing case studies and engaging in relevant communications.
  • Conduct site audits and inspections of highways depots and active projects across the East Sussex network.
  • Manage graded staff: the Environmental Sustainability Graduate and Environmental Advisor.

Who We’re Looking For

Core Requirements

  • Ability to influence and foster a positive sustainability culture.
  • Comprehensive understanding of UK policy and regulatory frameworks (construction/environmental compliance).
  • Experience in contract management, planning, and budget adherence.
  • Practical expertise in Sustainability risk management and opportunities within infrastructure/construction.
  • Programme management skills, including structured KPI monitoring and performance reporting.
  • Specific construction experience with a focus on environmental compliance and site operations.
  • Track record of case study development and promoting innovation.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, articulate on sustainability’s impact across clients, communities, and value chain.
  • Proficiency in constructing and analysing sustainability data.
  • Valid UK driving license and willingness to regularly travel across East Sussex.
