12 Month FTC Maternity Cover
£35,000 – £38,000 Per annum
This is a key role supporting the business in meeting its environmental and waste compliance obligations, maintaining our Environmental Management System, and helping ensure we continue to manage environmental risk effectively across our network.
The role will also play an important part in supporting the continued growth of Smiths News Recycle, ensuring that both existing and new waste activities are managed in line with relevant legislation, waste exemptions, regulatory position statements, permits and internal procedures.
What you’ll be doing
You will be responsible for the day-to-day management of environmental and waste compliance activity across Smiths News. This will include supporting waste duty of care, waste classification, regulatory reporting, waste documentation, exemptions, permits, regulatory position statements and waste management plans.

You will also support the ongoing management of our Environmental Management System, helping to maintain procedures, compliance evidence, audit actions and improvement plans. A key part of the role will be supporting our ISO 14001 certification activity, including audit preparation, evidence gathering, internal audit support and the close-out of corrective actions.
The role will involve working closely with operational teams, the Sustainability Steering Committee, Smiths News Recycle, suppliers, regulators, certification bodies and external advisors. You will provide practical guidance, reporting and support to help sites understand and deliver their environmental, waste and sustainability responsibilities.
What we’re looking for
We are looking for someone with a strong understanding of UK environmental legislation and waste compliance requirements. You will have good working knowledge of waste duty of care, waste classification, EWC codes and waste documentation.

You should also have experience managing or supporting an Environmental Management System, as well as experience working with environmental data, reporting requirements and compliance evidence.
Desirable experience
- IEMA membership or working towards membership.
- Internal auditor qualification.
- Experience working with the Environment Agency or Natural Resources Wales.
