Location HMP Albany, 55 Parkhurst Rd, Newport, IOW. PO30 5RS

Salary £26,575.65 per annum

Contract Permanent – 39 hours per week (Monday to Friday)

About the Role

We are seeking a practical and confident Handyperson / Maintenance Operative to join our team at HMP Albany, a category B adult male prison, in the role of Escort / Fabric Operative.

Join a team that is more than just colleagues – we work Monday to Friday as a supportive and driven family, united in creating a safe and nurturing environment.

HMP Albany operates like a self-contained city. Hundreds of people work together to keep it running smoothly. As part of the Facilities Maintenance Team, we are committed to ensuring smooth and safe operations—just as a heart pumps blood through the body, our work impacts every prisoner, employee, visitor, family, and the wider community.

By working alongside plumbers, electricians, carpenters, painters, cleaners, and administrators, you’ll become part of an experienced and passionate team, all dedicated to making a positive difference. This role is perfect for someone seeking to use their skills to shape a better future.

Key Responsibilities

The ideal candidate will thrive in a practical, hands-on environment, where they can apply their expertise to maintain and improve facilities. Responsibilities include—but are not limited to— Plaza:

  • Supporting the daily maintenance and repairs of buildings, grounds, and equipment within HMP Albany.
  • Ensuring health and safety compliance and performing maintenance tasks in line with established protocols.
  • Working alongside a diverse team of skilled operatives, including plumbers, electricians, and painters, to deliver a high standard of service.
  • Contributing to a safe and secure environment for prisoners, staff, and visitors.
  • Utilising hand and power tools effectively for maintenance and fabrication tasks.
  • Promoting rehabilitation and positive change through hands-on contributions to the prison’s operational efficiency.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
