Estates Surveyor, South & East Hub - 35383

Job Description

AN ADDITIONAL ALLOWANCE OF £4,750 IS OFFERED FOR THIS ROLE, INCREASING THE SALARY TO £49,030 PRO RATA. Please read the Additional Information pack for details about this allowance payment and role.

If you’re part of the Environment Agency, you’re part of the solution. Working with us means protecting and improving the environment and tackling issues of national importance. We’re based across England, and our responsibilities span industry regulation, flood defences, land contamination, water quality, fisheries and conservation.

Such broad scope of work calls for diverse, multi-skilled teams. Together, we’ll promote sustainable growth, tackle climate change and secure a better future for everyone.

Role Overview

As an Estates Surveyor, you’ll be involved in a wide variety of surveying work, providing professional property expertise across all aspects of our business. As the property specialist, you’ll work collaboratively within project teams helping to deliver a nationwide £5.4 billion programme of capital flood defence work that will protect 336,000 properties. You’ll be involved at all stages of project delivery from feasibility through to completion. Your expertise will be applied to the management of a diverse land and property portfolio, including commercial and rural property management, valuation and dealing with landlord and tenant issues.

As a confident negotiator, you’ll represent our interests with a broad customer and client base. With an up-to-date knowledge of current legislation and best practice, you’ll provide strong technical guidance and support to other members of your team. We’ll also support you to develop both personally and professionally.

Responding to incidents is an important part of what we do, and with this in mind you’ll have an incident role and should be ready to make yourself available to respond or provide business continuity support. This may attract an additional payment, and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you.

The Team

The Estates service extends to 160 people, offering professional support for Environment Agency land, property, compensation and valuation matters. We are core to the delivery of the Agency's £5.2 billion capital programme to better protect 336,000 homes. Our experienced teams specialise in negotiating access, dealing with compensation claims from land/property owners where they have suffered loss as a consequence of our work.

Experience/Skills Required

Please read the Additional Information pack for the full essential and desirable criteria required for this role. Below states the qualifications/memberships and experience required:

  • You will hold one of the following qualifications/memberships: you'll be a fellow of the CAAV (FAAV) qualified as a chartered surveyor (MRICS/FRICS) ideally in Land and Resources, Commercial or Rural. • Full and valid driving licence
  • Experience of estate management, acquisition and disposal work in the urban and/or rural environment and experience within land rights acquisition
  • Be able to demonstrate that you can draw on your knowledge and experience to advise on a range of property matter and projects

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
