Event Manager
Who we are
UK Flour Millers is the representative organisation for the flour milling industry in Great Britain and Ireland, and at the heart of the food sector. Flour millers run efficient businesses providing an ingredient found in 30% of supermarket foods and accounting for around 20% of dietary energy and a similar proportion of key nutrients such as protein, fibre and many minerals and vitamins.
Headline role summary
The Events Manager position is new and critical to the coordination of events both for the members of UK Flour Millers and (for both the association and third parties) within the historic house, 21 Arlington Street. This role will be particularly important with 2027 a year in which we deliver our next UK-based convention; 2028 the year of the association’s 150-year celebrations, with associated event programme; and potentially 2030 a year in which we host the bi-annual European Flour Millers convention.
The Events Manager will report to the chief executive, have line management responsibility for the receptionist, work closely with the wider team, particularly the communications manager and admin assistant.
What skills and experience are you likely to have?
The post holder is likely to be:
- Degree qualified
- A skilled manager of people
- Proven experience in an events, exhibitions and/or marketing role
- Strong project management skills, including delivery of large in-person events with multiple stakeholders
- Excellent written and visual communication skills
- Ability to work both strategically and operationally
- Confident managing external suppliers and budgets
- Detail orientated and insightful, able to see the implications of specific developments
- An experienced administrator
- Dogged and determined to see events and initiatives to their conclusion
- Flexible in working as part of a small trade association

What you can expect to be doing
The key responsibilities for this role are:
- Delivering key events including the annual reception and the bi-annual convention, working with various suppliers from caterers to AV teams, plus speakers and sponsors.
- Managing UK Flour Millers’ involvement with the European Flour Millers’ Congress, on alternate years.
- Principal liaison with UK Flour Millers’ president, covering events programme and arranging Convention in line with their priorities.
- Lead for activities of the strategically important Development Group, convening their meetings, planning and delivering their programme
- Principal contact for managing relations to all member and associate member enquiries.
- Cover for website updates, as needed.
- Every two years, running the Rice Symposium, which brings together members to hear from industry experts. Duties include securing the venue, making all arrangements and management on site through the day.
- Critical interfaces are working to support the chief executive in running the association, working with other UK Flour Millers’ team members and the flour miller members.
- Attending meetings and reporting to the executive board
- Liaison with Mills Archive Trust, working alongside the communications manager.
- Supporting the smooth running of the association, providing the essential admin support and office management, potentially including employment contracts, etc.

Key deliverables in role
The critical deliverables in this role will be:
- High quality events which at least break even, ideally making a financial return to the association
- Liaising with members and associates to ensure engagement and satisfaction with association events and other activities
How will it work?
This is a part-time post. Our office is in central London; as it is a part time role, expect to have a mix of locations with bias towards office, alongside venue visits, event delivery; an element of homeworking will be available as needed, in line with business needs.
There will be periodic requirement for out of hours working to support event delivery.
