Our Approach to R&D

Position Summary

The Executive Director of Oncology Search and Evaluation is a senior role within GSK’s R&D organisation, supporting late-stage global business development and licensing initiatives. The role directly shapes the success of GSK’s Oncology strategy and portfolio.

The Search and Evaluation (S&E) group proactively scouts external innovation to strengthen GSK’s oncology portfolio. The successful candidate will:

  • Lead teams of internal subject matter experts
  • Conduct technical evaluation and due diligence
  • Ensure deep understanding of investment opportunities
  • synthesise and communicate findings to enable enterprise decision-making
  • collaborate across organisational boundaries with entrepreneurial agility

Key prerequisites:

  • Strong scientific and clinical background
  • Proven people and project leadership
  • Business and strategic acumen
  • Exceptional communication skills

Responsibilities

This role offers opportunities to: • Synthesise diverse data (clinical, competitive, market, investment trends) to formulate high-value business cases. • Drive constructive debate among senior stakeholders while maintaining credibility and learning agility. • Operate with high urgency to accelerate deal processes toward go/no-go decisions. • Represent GSK Oncology to life science investors, biotech communities, and senior executives, fostering relationships and deal flow. • Lead technical due diligence processes, evaluating assets and delivering recommendations to governance bodies. • Act as primary liaison with external partners—from term sheet negotiations to deal execution. • Collaborate with GSK Corporate Development on contractual matters (e.g., term sheets). • Author business cases and presentations for senior management, supported by cross-functional teams. • Ensure timely decision-making by supporting cross-functional collaboration. • Expand GSK’s internal and external stakeholder network, positioning GSK as the partner of choice in biotech. • Monitor industry trends and competitor datasets in high-priority GSK focus areas.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements

✅ Advanced degree (e.g., MS, MBA, PhD, PharmD, JD, MD) ✅ 6+ years in oncology life sciences industry ✅ 4+ years in business development, search & evaluation—all candidates must submit a deal sheet ✅ Experience in pharmaceutical R&D, including leadership in drug discovery and development

Preferred Qualifications

🔹 PhD/MD + postdoc or MBA 🔹 Proven critical thinking and problem-solving skills 🔹 Experience thriving in fast-paced, matrixed environments 🔹 Innovation-driven leadership in drug discovery, with advanced drug development insights 🔹 Ability to engage executive teams effectively 🔹 Experience leading diverse teams in complex stakeholder environments 🔹 Strong track record of building internal/external collaborations (cultural sensitivity)

Work Location

Based in the U.S. or UK, with a hybrid working model (on-site/remote).


US Salary Info (New Hires): $229,350–$382,250 (adjusted for location, experience, education, market rates). Additional: Annual bonus + share-based long-term incentives.
