Civil Nuclear & Decommissioning Focus
Mott MacDonald leads projects in nuclear energy, focusing particularly on civil nuclear decommissioning—partnering with regional site licence companies, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), and Tier 1 contractors.
Our teams drive safe, cost-effective, and compliant nuclear decommissioning in high-hazard environments, including West Cumbria’s decommissioning hub, while aligning with the UK’s net-zero ambitions.
The Role: Senior Quantity Surveyor
Overarching Responsibilities
This is a pivotal leadership role within the commercial function, overseeing complex nuclear decommissioning programmes at their core. Your contributions will:
- Strategic commercial planning: Develop robust cost management strategies and NEC-led commercial governance.
- Risk management: Mitigate high-stakes risks within highly regulated environments.
- Stakeholder advisory: Serve as a trusted commercial advisor to clients and internal leadership.
- Team empowerment: Mentor junior commercial team members and drive professional development.
- Continuous improvement: Ensure enhanced commercial practices across all managed programmes.
Key Responsibilities
Programme and contract leadership:
- Lead NEC3/NEC4 contract management, adhering to project governance requirements.
- Oversee contract variations, ensuring compliance and value delivery.

Cost and financial oversight:
- Forecast, budget, and reporting at both project- and programme-level accuracy.
- Value construction and decommissioning works, maintaining transparency.
Client support & development:
- Advise clients on strategic decision-making, public policy impacts, and commercial assurance.
- Implement value engineering to demonstrate enhanced cost efficiency.
Risk & compliance: Manage compliance with nuclear regulations, industry standards, and safe commercial practices.
- Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams to meet programme KPIs.
Capability development:
- Mentor junior commercial staff, promoting professional growth.
Candidate Specification
Essential
- Degree or equivalent qualification in: quantity surveying, construction management, or related discipline.
- Significant experience in quantity surveying/commercial management, within major infrastructure or energy projects.
- Chartered status (MRICS) or working towards (with notable progress).
- NEC ECC accreditations with in-depth, senior experience managing NEC3/NEC4 contracts.
- Expertise in cost control, forecasting, and valuation across full project lifecycles.
- Demonstrated governance in contract administration, particularly within highly regulated environments (e.g., nuclear/energy sectors).
- Contract cashflow, change control, and commercial risk experience at scale.
Compliance & application:
- Hands-on CEMAR administration experience.
Soft skills & tools:
- Stakeholder management with an ability to influence clients and contractors.
- Strong command of Microsoft Office suite, including Excel, Word, Teams, and PowerPoint.
- Practical experience with NEC ECC and/or PSC contract administration.
Desirable
- Experience in civil nuclear or decommissioning at sites like NDA estate or Sellafield.
- NEC Project Manager accreditations.
- Experience providing portfolio-level commercial insights.
- Mentoring junior commercial staff.
