External Quality Assurer

Role Description In this role, you will conduct external quality assurance activities across approved centres, reviewing assessment practices, sampling learner evidence, and ensuring compliance with qualification standards and regulatory requirements. You will provide guidance and feedback to support continuous improvement and maintain the integrity and consistency of assessment decisions.

EQA’s are contracted on an annual and freelance basis, and there will be a requirement to travel as part of this role.

Key Responsibilities

External Quality Assurance Activities Conduct External Quality Assurance (EQA) monitoring activities for approved centres. Verify that assessment decisions are valid, reliable, fair, and consistent with qualification requirements. Review learner evidence, assessment records, and quality assurance documentation. Evaluate the effectiveness of Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) systems. Ensure centres maintain assessment standards that meet awarding organisation requirements. Centre Assessment Standards Scrutiny (CASS) Implement the awarding organisation’s Centre Assessment Standards Scrutiny (CASS) strategy. Conduct risk-based sampling of assessment decisions. Monitor compliance with qualification specifications and assessment methodologies. Identify risks that may impact qualification integrity and standards.

Monitoring and Reporting Produce detailed EQA reports following monitoring activities. Identify examples of good practice and opportunities for improvement. Specify required corrective actions and completion deadlines. Monitor completion of action plans and verify evidence of compliance.

Centre Support and Development Provide professional guidance to assessors, Internal Quality Assurers, and centre management. Support centres in understanding qualification and assessment requirements. Promote continuous improvement in assessment and quality assurance practices. Contribute to assessor and IQA standardisation activities.

Compliance and Governance Ensure compliance with awarding organisation policies and procedures. Monitor adherence to policies relating to: Assessment Quality assurance Equality, diversity and inclusion Malpractice and maladministration Appeals and complaints Data protection Escalate significant quality concerns to the Quality Manager or designated responsible officer.

Risk Management Contribute to centre risk assessments. Recommend enhanced monitoring where risks are identified. Support investigations into malpractice, maladministration, or assessment irregularities.

Standardisation Participate in EQA standardisation meetings and activities. Maintain consistency of quality assurance decisions across centres. Keep up to date with qualification changes, industry developments, and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications Applicants must hold the appropriate assessor and internal verifier qualifications (D32/D33 or A1/A2) Appropriate external verifier qualifications are desirable (Level 4 award in External Quality Assurance or its equivalent D35/V2). If you have not achieved these qualifications, SIAS will support training and you will be required to work towards the qualification in post. Occupational knowledge and competency in one of the following sectors: Laboratory Science Artificial Intelligence Battery Manufacture Carbon Capture Hydrogen Nuclear Process Industry and Process Safety Sustainability and Net Zero Electrical Technology
