Job Title: External Quality Auditor – QAN/QAR / Hazardous Area

Job Type: Permanent, Full-Time Location: Home-based (with international travel) Hours: 37.5 per week Industry: Testing, Inspection & Certification


Overview

SGS seeks an experienced External Quality Lead Auditor to deliver QAN/QARs (Quality Assurance Notifications/testing for classifying equipment for hazardous areas) and related audits, primarily internationally (70%) and within the UK (30%). This role is pivotal in ensuring compliance with industry standards whilst supporting clients to enhance safe, high-quality operations. Responsibilities

Core Duties

  • Plan and conduct external audits focused on manufacturing quality systems, adhering strictly to BS EN IEC 80079-34 as well as other regulatory frameworks (including China’s ‘CCC’, Korean, and North American standards).
  • Accurately assess compliance against documented processes, identify nonconformities, risks, and potential improvement opportunities.
  • Produce clear, detailed, and actionable audit reports, tracking corrective action effectiveness post-audit.
  • Maintain audit schedules, documentation, and records in full compliance with accreditation protocols.
  • Champion strong customer service and quality assurance whilst ensuring adherence to SGS policies and integrity standards.

Requirements

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven 2+ years’ experience as a Lead Auditor, specialising in engineering or hazardous area environments (primary requirements).
  • Deep understanding of quality management systems with expertise in aligning with industry compliance standards.
  • Strong knowledge of ISO 9001:2015, including audit principles, techniques, and best practices.
  • Exceptional written, spoken, and interpersonal communication skills, coupled with precise report-writing ability.
  • Attention to detail, moral integrity, and excellent project management skills to handle multiple audits efficiently.
  • Full UK driving licence (viability for international travel essential).

Desirable Skills & Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of EN ISO/IEC 80079-34 and miscellaneous hazardous area standards (e.g., the full IEC 60079 series).
  • Experience navigating ATEX, UKEx, or IECEx regulatory regimes.
  • Engineering or closely-related technical background with direct industry exposure.
  • A higher qualification (e.g., MSc, MBA) or active membership in relevant professional certifying bodies (enhances eligibility).
