Join Tetra Tech as an Extraction Chemist
No prior laboratory experience required, develop analytical expertise in a UKAS-accredited laboratory
Purpose And Scope Of The Role
This full-time, permanent Extraction Chemist position is based at Tetra Tech’s Bedford laboratory. You will carry out routine extractions, sample preparation and instrument support within a commercial analytical team serving water, utilities, agrochemical and defence clients. Daily activities include performing extractions to established quality procedures, maintaining consumables and bench equipment, and contributing to calibration and equipment checks. You will work in a laboratory that has an international reputation for resolving complex analytical challenges and was among the first in the UK to gain UKAS accreditation for PFAS analysis. Project work ranges from short monitoring campaigns to multi-stage remediation programmes; you will collaborate with analysts, chemists and technicians across the laboratory team to deliver timely, regulatory-compliant results. The role forms part of an Extraction Development scheme, with regular performance reviews that support salary progression.
Your Impact In This Position
In the short term you will ensure consistent, high-quality sample processing and support routine reporting. Over the medium term you will contribute to method optimisation and support larger remediation and monitoring projects, increasing your technical autonomy. Long term, the role provides a clear path to senior analyst or method development positions within the laboratory, with opportunities to lead client programmes and specialise in PFAS or pesticide residue work on significant, multidisciplinary projects.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
