Building Services Operative / Fabric Engineer
LOCATION: Highcross Shopping Centre, Leicester
SHIFT PATTERN:
- Alternating early and late shifts (Monday–Friday)
- Week 1: Early shift (7:00 am – 3:30 pm)
- Week 2: Late shift (12:30 pm – 9:00 pm)
- Weekend: Working 1 weekend in 6
SALARY: £30,000 – £32,000 per annum (depending on experience)

Role Overview & Purpose
Based on-site within a team, the Building Services Operative/Fabric Engineer will undertake planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and building fabric work across a retail property.
Essential responsibilities include:
- Fault finding, testing, repairing and preventative maintenance of building systems and fabric
- Assisting with reactive repairs
- Liaising with associate team members
- Managing specialist subcontractor coordination
- Adhering to QA, quality assurance, and site procedures
- Enforcing Health & Safety protocols
- Maintaining post-job documentation and records
- Conducting inspections and repairs as requested
Additionally, you will:
- Work in plant rooms and elevated environments (platforms, ladders)
- Keep issued tools meticulously maintained
- Demonstrate willingness to volume progressive work and support the contract
Key Responsibilities
- Execute and document PPM tasks via a computerised maintenance system
- Uphold engineering standards to ensure reliability and efficiency
- Manage specialist subcontractor engagement for PPM and maintenance needs
- Ensure that quality, compliance, and safety requirements are consistently met
- Follow all accredited Health & Safety procedures
- Maintain a record of all on-site interventions and documentation

Degree Of Responsibility
This role provides exposure to quality standards, manuals, and personnel contact. Exact tasks may vary, reflecting the evolving nature of operational demands.
Required Skills & Experience
Essential
- Confience and experience in painting, light joinery, and plumbing
- Ability to adapt technical skills to align with a busy retail environment
- Demonstrated administrative & organisational abilities
- Constructor History Finder or relevant experience
- Proven Health & Safety knowledge (including adherence to detailed protocols)
- Previous maintenance team experience
- Familiarity with System of Work permits
Desired
- Software proficiency: Microsoft Office, CMMS or CAFM tools
- Certifications in IPAF, PASMA, or CSCS
- Basic electrician skills (multi-meter competence)
- HVAC & Facilities Engineering experience
