About the Role
Activate Learning is seeking a Facilities & Maintenance Officer to join the team at our Merrist Wood College, keeping the campus safe, secure, compliant, and fully operational to support teaching and learning.
Responsibilities
As a Facilities & Maintenance Officer, you will act as a hands-on handyperson carrying out a wide range of day-to-day compliance and maintenance tasks across the campus. Duties include:
- Unlocking and securing buildings
- General repairs
- Painting and decorating
- Setting up rooms for events
- Moving furniture
- Health and safety, and compliance checks
- Monitoring site security
- Responding to helpdesk requests
- Maintaining external areas
- Overseeing waste and recycling processes
This is a varied, practical role, ideal for a reliable and proactive individual who enjoys hands-on trade-related work and problem-solving in a facilities or handyperson environment.
Work Conditions
- Permanent, full-time role (37 hours per week) at Merrist Wood
- Work on an on-call rota for one week in four
- Some rota-based shift work to cover campuses during evenings
- Support needed across other Surrey campuses when required
Requirements
Essential Skills & Experience
- Practical experience in general maintenance, repairs, compliance tasks, and associated requirements
- Knowledge of Health & Safety procedures and relevant legislation, including:
- Safeguarding
- The Equality Act 2010
- Ability to assess, diagnose, and independently resolve minor maintenance issues before escalating to external contractors
- Basic IT skills, including use of app-based reporting and helpdesk systems
