Facilities & Maintenance Officer

About the Role

Activate Learning is seeking a Facilities & Maintenance Officer to join the team at our Merrist Wood College, keeping the campus safe, secure, compliant, and fully operational to support teaching and learning.

Responsibilities

As a Facilities & Maintenance Officer, you will act as a hands-on handyperson carrying out a wide range of day-to-day compliance and maintenance tasks across the campus. Duties include:

  • Unlocking and securing buildings
  • General repairs
  • Painting and decorating
  • Setting up rooms for events
  • Moving furniture
  • Health and safety, and compliance checks
  • Monitoring site security
  • Responding to helpdesk requests
  • Maintaining external areas
  • Overseeing waste and recycling processes

This is a varied, practical role, ideal for a reliable and proactive individual who enjoys hands-on trade-related work and problem-solving in a facilities or handyperson environment.

Work Conditions

  • Permanent, full-time role (37 hours per week) at Merrist Wood
  • Work on an on-call rota for one week in four
  • Some rota-based shift work to cover campuses during evenings
  • Support needed across other Surrey campuses when required

Requirements

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Practical experience in general maintenance, repairs, compliance tasks, and associated requirements
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety procedures and relevant legislation, including:
    • Safeguarding
    • The Equality Act 2010
  • Ability to assess, diagnose, and independently resolve minor maintenance issues before escalating to external contractors
  • Basic IT skills, including use of app-based reporting and helpdesk systems

  • Confidently handles independence for routine compliance and maintenance tasks while ensuring health and safety standards are met
  • Demonstrates a flexible, practical attitude and a willingness to develop through training
