Facilities & Maintenance Officer – Guildford College
About the Role
Activate Learning is seeking a Facilities & Maintenance Officer to join the team at our Guildford College, ensuring the campus remains safe, secure, compliant, and fully operational to support teaching and learning.
As a hands-on handyperson, you’ll carry out a wide range of day-to-day compliance and maintenance tasks across campus, including:
Key Responsibilities
- Unlocking and securing buildings
- General repairs and maintenance across the campus
- Painting and decorating as required
- Setting up rooms for events and classrooms
- Moving and rearranging furniture
- Health and safety compliance checks and inspections
- Monitoring and maintaining site security protocols
- Helpdesk response – addressing reported maintenance issues promptly
- Managing external area maintenance (e.g., grounds, pathways)
- Overseeing waste and recycling processes
This is a hands-on, practical role suited to a reliable, proactive individual with trade backgrounds who enjoys problem-solving and supporting campus operations.
Role Details
- Position: Permanent, full-time (37 hours per week)
- Location: Guildford College (with rotational on-call and occasional support across Surrey campuses)
- Working Pattern: 1 week secure on-call each month, including evening shifts to cover campus access, plus occasional campus shifts

Essential Skills & Experience
Practical Experience
- Experience in general maintenance, repairs, compliance tasks, and allied responsibilities
Knowledge & Skills
- Health & Safety expertise: Familiarity with relevant legislation, including Safeguarding and the Equality Act 2010
- Troubleshooting ability: Confident in risk-assessing, diagnosing, and resolving maintenance issues before escalating
Technical Competencies
- Basic IT proficiency (including app-based reporting and helpdesk systems like ServiceNow or similar)
