Facilities Assistant / Building Control Officer

Requisition ID: 10759 Location: National Highways (National Highways Account), Embankment – Cathedral Approach, Salford, M37FB Salary: £14.12 per hour Hours: 40 hours per week across two shift patterns (Monday to Friday):

  • 07:00–15:30
  • 10:30–19:00

A site-based role.


About the Role

National Highways is delivering Amey’s award-winning facilities and estate management services, including maintenance, property management, cleaning, and project work. The successful candidate will collaborate with engineers, operatives, clients, and partners to uphold safety and operational continuity for one of Europe’s most critical road networks.

Our teams maintain the annually inspected roads, signs, lighting, and plant—all while maintaining best practice for account implementation.


Key Responsibilities

Administrative & Logistical Duties

  • Administer day-to-day functions using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Manage communication with suppliers via email and telephone.
  • Preparation & processing of site documentation for Engineers/Operatives, including:
    • Planning, Prevention, Maintenance (PPM) workflows.
    • Reactive work requests.
  • Maintain clear ethics, conduct, and safety records, including COSHH documentation.

Building & Maintenance Support

  • Conduct daily site inspections—log findings, track action items, and escalate issues.
  • Operate as first-line response for incidents, including:
    • Fire alarm activations.
    • Power outages.
    • Emergency maintenance callouts.
  • Ensure Health & Safety compliance—adhere to protocols such as COSHH, fire safety rules, and emergency procedures.
  • Perform quick-fix maintenance tasks (e.g., minor repairs, breakdowns) as needed.

Facilities & Groundskeeping

  • Basic building & ground maintenance, including:
    • Sweeping, cleaning, waste management.
    • Stocking tea stations & toilet supplies.
    • Managing stationery levels (letters, paper, etc.).
    • Seasonal tasks, e.g., winter gritting.

What We’re Looking For

Essential

  • Attention to detail for documentation, filing, and record-keeping.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Strong communication skills: verbal clarity, email writing, telephone etiquette.
  • Understanding of basic Health & Safety and COSHH requirements in workplace environments.
  • Customer-focused mindset for engaging with staff, clients, and contractors.
  • Practical ability to undertake motion and light repairs, handyman tasks, or janitorial roles.

Desirable

  • Prior experience in facilities management, building control, or administrative roles within transport/engineering.
  • Familiarity with PPM/PM frameworks or asset management systems.
