Cleaning Officer (Permanent, Part-Time) – Manchester City Council
Position Overview
Works hrs: 20 per week, 7am to 11am Contract Type: 1 × Permanent, Part Time Closing Date: 16 July 2026 Closing Time: 11.59pm Interview Method: Face to Face
About the Role
As a Cleaning Officer, you’ll play a crucial role in maintaining a clean, safe, and inclusive environment across diverse council buildings, including schools, depots, libraries, offices, and accommodations. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to shaping a healthier, greener, and fairer Manchester while joining a dedicated, values-driven workforce.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out daily cleaning tasks such as hoovering, mopping, polishing, emptying bins, and sanitising toilets in various council buildings.
- Operate equipment and chemicals safely, adhering to health and safety standards.
- Follow scheduled cleaning schedules and report any maintenance issues in a timely manner.
- Work independently or alongside a team, depending on location.
- Provide a high standard of service to ensure council buildings are pristine for occupants.
Requirements
Essential
- A genuine willingness to provide great service.
- Ability to work consistent shifts (placement within 6am–7pm on weekdays; this role may vary outside those hours).
- Mandatory residency: Must live within the boundaries of the City of Manchester (legal Council Tax liability required).
- Right to legally work in the UK (visa sponsorship unavailable).
- Physical capability to handle manual tasks, consistently wearing a uniform, and adequate footwear.
- Willingness to complete references (3 years’ employment history required where possible).

Working Hours
Responsible hours in this role are 7am to 11am, but typically, buildings served range from 6am to 7pm weekdays. Individual duties may vary.

Hours Worked Independently
Some locations require single cleaners; others work in pairs, depending on schedules.
Compensation & Benefits
- Job rates will follow Grade 1 of the council pay scheme.
- Generous long-term leave: After 5 years, you’ll gain 31 days annual leave (currently 26 days).
