Location: Across five London nurseries — Angel, Crouch Hill, Paddington, Tufnell Park, and West Hampstead (Travel between sites required)
Contract type: Permanent
Hours: Full-time or part-time; some evening/school-holiday working for disruptive works
Holidays: 25 days + bank holidays
Salary: £40,000 – £50,000 per annum (FTE), prorated for part-time roles, depending on experience
About the Role
Les Petites Étoiles (LPE) runs five bilingual Montessori nurseries across London. We are seeking a hands-on Facilities Manager & Handyperson to maintain five sites—ensuring they remain safe, compliant, and well-kept.
You will:
- Carry out repairs and improvements across all nurseries.
- Manage procurement, contractor appointments, supervision, and project completion.
Key Responsibilities
Hands-on Maintenance (In-house)
- Perform routine repairs and improvements across all sites—
- Carpentering
- Minor plumbing
- Painting & decorating
- Fixing doors, floors, frames, shelving, and fittings
- Maintain external areas, including:
- Wood treatments (oiling, sheds, fencing)
- Canopy repairs
- Gutter & roof drainage clearance
- Respond promptly to urgent requests from nursery managers, prioritising health-and-safety issues.
- Handle out-of-hours/emergency call-outs for tasks not safe during child presence (evenings, weekends, and school holidays).
- Triage jobs to determine if they can be done in-house or require a specialist contractor.

Projects, Procurement & Contractor Management
- Scope larger capital projects, obtain and compare quotes, and provide clear recommendations.
- Appoint and oversee specialists, including:
- Commercial kitchen extraction & ventilation
- Air conditioning (F-gas compliant)
- Roofing, glazing, electrical, plumbing, and general builders
- Coordinate disruptive works around nursery hours, leveraging weeks and weekends where possible.
- Keep projects on schedule and budget while updating Directors on progress.
Compliance & Safety
- Ensure regulated trades (e.g., Gas Safe, NICEIC/Part P, F-gas, working at height) are certified—never performed self.
- Manage statutory/landlord processes, including:
- Planning permission
- Building Control approvals
- Licences to Alter
- Fire Risk Assessments
- Maintain compliance for Ofsted and health-and-safety standards; preserve records, certificates, and warranties.
Systems, Budgets & Communication
- Maintain the maintenance tracking system (currently Trello) across all sites.
- Develop and enforce a preventive maintenance program, scheduling proactive checks.
- Track budgets, flagging variances early.
- Foster strong relationships with:
- Nursery managers
- Colleagues & contractors
- Landlords
- Directors

Working as a Team
- Operate within a small team (2 roles total).
- Lead on quoting, procurement, and project oversight, supporting colleagues as needed.
- Optimise in-house resources—prioritise skills while delegating specialists.
Person Specification
Essential Requirements
- Proven hands-on maintenance/trades background with a strong multi-skillset.
- Experience in building or refurbishment project management—scoping, quoting, and contractor supervision.
- Basic knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, and decorating.
- Sound understanding of building compliance (Building Regulations, planning, fire-safety).
- Highly organised, able to multi-site prioritise independently.
- Strong oral/written communication and record-keeping; experienced with simple digital tools (Trello, email, spreadsheets).
- Full UK driving licence.
- Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain) and safeguarding awareness within childcare settings.
