Fall Aquarist Intern – Freshwater Gallery

Summary

Interns assist staff Aquarists with daily animal husbandry responsibilities of the New England Aquarium’s Freshwater Gallery, including:

  • Feeding of fish, reptiles, and amphibians
  • Maintaining aquarium systems
  • Routine animal care with exhibits focusing on freshwater areas from the Amazon River Basin to New England's rivers and ponds

Interns will learn about the care of species such as:

  • Piranhas
  • Amazonian reptiles
  • Cichlids
  • Salmonids
  • Live plants

Time Commitment

  • 12 weeks duration
  • At least two full days per week (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM)

Responsibilities

Interns may assist with the following tasks (but not exclusively limited to):

  • Daily animal care and exhibit maintenance, including the appearance of the gallery
  • Maintenance of windows, backgrounds, and habitats
  • Diet preparation and feeding (including vitamins and supplements)
  • Water parameter recording and monitoring
  • Daily tidying and upkeep of behind-the-scenes spaces
  • Maintenance of exhibit life support systems, including:
    • Protein skimmers
    • UV sterilizers
    • Mechanical filtration processes
  • Participation in operant conditioning and enrichment of different animal species
  • In-water tasks, including:
    • Scrubbing habitat surfaces
    • Cleaning aquarium windows
  • Assistance with staff projects in the Freshwater Gallery
  • Potential support in additional Galleries, including:
    • Tropical
    • Temperate
    • Yawkey
    • Northern Waters
  • Compliance with record keeping in accordance with New England Aquarium (NEAq) protocols
  • Observation and potential assistance with veterinary procedures
  • Attendance at professional development sessions from the Volunteer Programs and Internships office

Qualifications

  • Must possess the physical ability to lift 50 lbs and climb multiple flights of stairs
  • Ability to follow multiple verbal/written instructions and execute them efficiently
  • Capable of independent work and collaboration in a team environment
  • Comfortable working with raw animal food, including seafood
  • Prepared to work in confined spaces with varying conditions—temperature, lighting, and noise levels
  • Familiarity and comfort with handling live food items, such as fruit flies, crickets, and worms
