Family Practitioner (Support Worker) – Family Assessment Role

The Role

Job Title: Support Worker (Family Assessment) Core Purpose: To conduct family assessments, safeguard children and parents, and build nurturing environments through collaborative, empowering support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct assessments to help families develop and maintain a safe and nurturing environment.
  • Safeguard children and parents through continuous assessment, planning, and intervention.
  • Build trusting relationships with families, offering ongoing guidance, encouragement, and crisis management.
  • Support parents to reach their full potential, enabling them to provide care that meets a "good enough standard".
  • Deliver daily practical support, including crisis intervention and parenting skill development.
  • Mentor and advise parents to build long-term stability and resilience.
  • Monitor and observe parent-child interactions, contributing to healthy attachment and child development.
  • Engage in family therapy and activities that strengthen bonds and promote positive behaviour.
  • Maintain clear, comprehensive written records of observations, family goals, and documentation.
  • Advocate for families, collaborating with community resources and professional services.
  • Operate effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, demonstrating emotional resilience and adaptability.
  • Prioritise a child-focused approach while handling challenges with compassion and professionalism.

Requirements

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Preferred: Level 3 Children & Young People’s Workforce Diploma (though full training provided).
  • Experience working with families in residential or supported environments.
  • A genuine passion for helping others with a commitment to social care and family support.
  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) with excellent literacy and organisational abilities.
  • Patient, empathetic, and understanding of the complex issues families may face.
  • Child-focused mindset, prioritising safety and well-being at all times.
  • Nurturing, supportive, and effective mentoring skills with families.
  • Experience in safeguarding and creating safe, stable environments.
  • Self-motivated, able to work under pressure, and adaptable to change.
  • Transferable skills from professional (e.g., health, education) or personal experience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trusting relationships with children, parents, and colleagues.
  • Professional demeanour with the ability to stay calm under pressure.
