About the Role

  • Job Title: Family Support Worker (Family Help), South Locality
  • Salary: £32,061 – £36,363 annually (£19,497 – £22,112 pro rata)
  • Contract: Permanent
  • Hours: 22.50 hrs per week
  • Location: Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire
  • Closing Date: 14 July 2026

Introduction

Join Herefordshire Council as a Family Support Worker within the Families First Programme, playing a pivotal role in therapeutic intervention, whole-family support, and multi-agency collaboration for vulnerable children, young people, and families.

You will deliver evidence-based, restorative practices, devise Family Help plans, and champion long-term resilience and wellbeing. This rewarding role supports families in homes, schools, and community settings, working with children with special educational needs, disabilities, or life-limiting conditions.


The Role

Core Responsibilities

  • Direct Support & Intervention

    • Deliver individual and family-focused therapeutic interventions (1:1 and group sessions).
    • Work across settings to ensure trauma-informed, restorative practices.
    • Complete Family Help Assessments (including Section 17), SMART outcome planning, and targeted reviews (e.g., Child in Need level).
  • Collaborative & Multi-Agency Coordination

    • Act as a lead worker to manage complex caseloads and coordinate support across agencies (social care, education, healthcare).
    • Assess needs, make referrals, and ensure adherence to local Early Help safeguarding thresholds.
    • Advocate for children’s voices and family needs in multi-agency contexts.
    • Deliver parenting programmes (examples: Triple P or Solihull model).
  • Specialist & Safeguarding Activities

    • Conduct young carer assessments and other specialist reviews.
    • Support safeguarding duties, including identifying exploitation and risk mitigation planning.
    • Chair Family Help meetings and contribute to strategic planning.

  • Admin & Professional Involvement
    • Maintain high-quality, accurate records and written reports (e.g., Safeguarding Children Board panels).
    • Prioritise workloads independently or collaboratively.
    • Engage in training programs, supervision, and court processes as required.

About You

Essential Criteria

You must demonstrate the following:

  • Qualification: Level 4 or higher in health, education, child development, youth work, or social care.
  • Experience: Strong track record in working one-to-one with children/youth and families, including applying social care and Early Help frameworks.
  • Leadership in Social Care: Proven experience leading multi-agency support (mapping referrals, chairing planning meetings).
  • Therapeutic Interventions:
    • Skills in evidence-based methods (e.g., solution-focused practice, motivational interviewing).
    • Preferable experience in parenting support programmes.
  • Communication & Advocacy:
    • Ability to build trust with complex families, ensure child participation, and negotiate solutions.
    • Excellent verbal/written communication for priorities, reports, and safeguarding filings.
  • Organisation & Judgement:
    • Skilled in managing diverse workloads, prioritising high-need families, and applying confident professional discretion.
  • Safeguarding & Liaison: Strong proficiency in safeguarding duties, from risk assessment to challenging practitioners when necessary.
  • Practical Flexibility: Hold personal transport and be willing to travel across Herefordshire, including evenings/weekends as required.
