Family Time Support Worker

Location: Bridgwater (and other sites including Taunton, Shepton Mallet & Yeovil) Salary: £25,989 - £28,142 per annum (Grade 13) Closing Date: 19/07/2026


About the Role

At Somerset Council, we are transforming how we support children and families, embedding early help, fostering collaborative cross-agency working, and keeping more young people safely within their families. As part of our Families First Partnership programme, this 2-year fixed-term role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to meaningful, long-term change.

The Family Time Support Worker ensures positive, supervised contact between children and their loved ones, promoting safe, nurturing relationships while supporting reunification and family stability where possible.


Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise face-to-face or virtual family time under court orders or professional assessment
  • Facilitate sessions across various settings, including out-of-hours when needed
  • Assess and support parenting skills and improve family relationships
  • Contribute to care planning, assessments, and court processes
  • Deliver structured parenting interventions and coordinate post-session engagement
  • Coordinate transport arrangements for children attending critical sessions
  • Maintain detailed, high-quality records with safeguarding alertness
  • Escalate concerns, act when necessary, and provide court evidence as required
  • Support transitional plans for reunification or reconnection
  • Collaborate with social workers, health, education, policing, and other agencies
  • Commit to training, continuous professional development (CPD), and service improvement

Essential Requirements

  • Knowledge of:

    • Rights of users/carers and the Code of Practice for Social Care Workers
    • Relevant legislation (e.g., Children Act 1989, Family Law)
  • Experience:

    • Some background in supportive or caring work (not necessarily paid)
  • Qualifications:

    • GCSE English and Maths (or equivalent)
    • Willingness to work towards an NVQ Level 3 in Children and Young People’s Welfare

    • Willingness to develop skills, including virtual communication

Desirable Skills & Qualifications

  • Clerical/administrative experience or IT proficiency (data entry, virtual platforms)
  • Qualifications in social care or manual handling certification
  • Strong empathy, cultural awareness, and respect for diverse needs
