About the Role
Somerset Council invites you to join an exciting transformation programme within their Families First Partnership. In a refreshing approach to support children and families, this initiative reshapes community and multi-agency services to deliver right help at the right time in the right way.
We are in a pivotal stage of transformation, focusing on a more connected, relationship-based system, placing children, young people, and families at its core. Central to this vision, we seek to strengthen early help, enhance multi-agency collaboration, and support more children to thrive within their families and communities.
This is a fixed-term role for two years, aligns with our transformation goals, and allows for meaningful contributions to reshaping Children’s Services in Somerset.

Role Summary
The Family Time Support Worker ensures safe, positive, and meaningful relationships between children/young people and their parents, relatives or significant others during supervised contact. You will:
- Safeguard children during family interactions.
- Create a structured and nurturing environment to foster strong, healthy connections.
- Improve family relationships, parenting practices, and children’s outcomes.
- Work directly with children and their families.
- Influence assessments, care plans, and decisions regarding reunification, reconnections, and long-term stability.

Combining support with security during family engagements, this role epitomises our multi-agency system – one that integrates multiple sectors to achieve the best results for Somerset’s youngest and most vulnerable.
What You'll Do - Key Responsibilities
- Supervise face-to-face and virtual family time in compliance with court orders and safety requirements
- Facilitate structured family sessions across different settings, including after hours when necessary
- Evaluate interactions between children, parents/guardians to provide targeted guidance and support
- Contribute to care planning, parenting assessments, Child Protection Conferences (CPC), and Family Time Plans
- Deliver structured interventions to enhance parenting capabilities and engagement
- Act as a bridge between professionals and families, coordinating care plans and reviewing progress
- Arrange transport for children to ensure punctual attendance to sessions
- Maintain accurate, timely, high-quality records of all interactions and sessions
- Take immediate action for safeguarding concerns—including ending unsafe sessions or escalating to higher authorities
- Prepare reports and provide court testimony when required
- Assist in resettlement discussions for reunification/reconnections with family
- Work collaboratively within a multi-agency team to address children’s needs holistically
- Engage in ongoing training and workshops to promote service enhancement

What We’re Looking For – Knowledge, Experience & Skills
Essential Criteria:
- Awareness: Understanding of users’, children’s, and carers’ rights along with the Code of Practice for Social Care Workers
- Knowledge: Knowledge of relevant legislation and systems governing childcare and safeguarding
- Experience: Previous experience in caring or supportive roles (paid or voluntary is acceptable)
- Qualifications: Functional literacy and numeracy up to GCSE standard or equivalent
- Willingness to undertake: Level 3 Qualifications in Children and Young People’s Workforce training
- Skills: Confidence in engaging directly with children and their families to mentor parenting and establish healthy bonds
Desirable Traits:
- Experience in clerical/administrative roles to aid records management
- Relevant qualifications or certificates in social care
- Basic knowledge of manual handling procedures for client support
- IT proficiency to input/retrieve and manage data effectively
- Empathy, resilience, and respect for diverse needs
Additional Information
- Annual leave: 28 days, including bank holidays
- Contract: Fixed-term for two years
