Herts & Essex Fertility Centre

The clinic’s fertility treatment success rates are among the highest in the country, as verified by Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority (HFEA) data. The team specialises in the assessment of fertility issues and individualised treatment plans to support successful pregnancies. Patients receive care in a friendly, supportive, and professional setting, tailored to their specific needs.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Meeting Individual Patient Needs: Responsible for meeting the individual needs of patients and their partners attending the Herts & Essex Fertility Centre.
  • Compliance: Ensure all activities are carried out within Herts & Essex Fertility Centre protocols, the NMC code of conduct, the Healthcare Commission guidelines, and the HFEA code of practice.
  • Clinical Responsibilities:
    • Act as a role model as a Fertility Nurse and be accountable for own actions.
    • Maintain a high level of confidentiality at all times.
    • Identify areas of development within the scope of professional practice and maintain up-to-date knowledge by reading relevant material and attending appropriately identified courses and conferences.
    • Be computer literate and competent in using Microsoft Outlook, Acubase, and access I-Drive.
    • Be familiar with Herts & Essex Fertility Centre clinical protocols, patient information and consent forms, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
    • Deal with telephone and email enquiries in a professional manner and ensure that all information given is up-to-date and accurate.
    • Perform Venepuncture, interpret, and give blood results to patients when necessary.
    • Coordinate treatment cycle plans and teach patients to self-administer fertility drugs.
    • Obtain informed consent from patients within HFEA code of practice and counsel patients about the implications of their treatment.
    • Coordinate treatment cycles of satellite clinics and ensure that all documentation is complete.
    • Have a recognized qualification and perform Trans-vaginal ultrasound scans, interpret scan findings, and take appropriate actions.
    • Participate in clinical audit.
    • Be aware of Herts & Essex Fertility Centre’s accounts process and ensure accounts are informed of patient charges.
    • Use the centre’s pharmacy system to dispense drugs within agreed SOP.
    • Ensure the correct control, storage, and administration of drugs are undertaken in accordance with Centre protocols.
    • Ensure the removal of clinical waste and laundry processing in accordance with service level agreements.
    • Work within Theatre & Recovery environment according to Herts and Essex clinical protocols and SOP’s.
    • Have awareness of infection control and work within CQC standards.
    • Take part in on-call Rota covering evenings and weekends for urgent enquiries.
    • Work in collaboration with all members of the multi-disciplinary team.

General Duties

  • Ensure that all information concerning patients is treated in the strictest confidence.
  • Relay messages to appropriate personnel.
  • Help in any way to make the department run as smoothly as possible.
  • Be aware of and adhere to:
    • Health and Safety at Work Act
    • Company policies and guidelines
    • Disciplinary/Grievance Procedure
    • Fire Action Policy
    • No Smoking policy
    • Data Protection Act
    • HFEA code of practice
    • Quality and Healthcare Commission standards
  • Read and sign all Policies in accordance with the Care Standards Act 2002.

Special Authorities

  • Access to all facilities within the Herts and Essex Fertility Centre with particular responsibility to Nursing.

Education / Special Knowledge

  • Good knowledge of computer systems, SAGE Line 50, and Microsoft Office.
  • Good leadership and communication skills.

All employees must be aware of the responsibility placed on them under the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), to ensure that the agreed safety procedures are carried out to maintain a safe environment for employees and visitors. Individual employees should also refer to specific health and safety requirements within their own job descriptions.

The post holder must maintain the confidentiality of information about patients, staff, and Centre business in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.
