Field Engineer – Highways Technology

Looking to make a real difference to the UK’s strategic road network? We’re recruiting for a Highways Technology Field Engineer to join our innovative Area 7 team, where cutting-edge infrastructure meets operational excellence.
This role focuses on the maintenance, repair, and upgrade of roadside technology assets, such as traffic signals, electronic signage, CCTV, emergency telephones, and weather stations, ensuring our highways remain safe, efficient, and future-ready.
The primary base for this position is the Watford Gap Motorway Compound (M1, Jct 16/17) (NN67UZ). While the role is primarily remote, significant travel is required as duties are location-based.
This role offers competitive wages with overtime opportunities across 42 hours (Monday–Friday), with additional standby duties.
About the Role
The Highways Technology Field Engineer plays a vital role in ensuring that our road networks are supported by the latest communication and electronic assets. You’ll deliver reactive and planned maintenance, conduct system diagnostics, and assist with commissioning new infrastructure, all while contributing to broader safety and efficiency objectives.
Your Key Responsibilities
Technical Operations
- Conduct reactive maintenance and repairs on highway technology, including:
- Traffic signals & roadside signs
- CCTV systems
- Emergency roadside telephones
- Queue protection barriers
- Traffic counting equipment (radar-based)
- Weather stations & smart infrastructure
- Carry out planned, cyclic maintenance in line with client requirements, manufacturer standards, and British Standards
- Perform electronic fault diagnostics on communication assets, including SCADA, sensors, and controls

Reporting & Compliance
- Produce detailed reports on maintenance actions, fault resolution, system upgrades, and asset conditions
- Adhere to health, safety, and working practices, including lone-worker procedures and emergency protocols
- Support project administration (progress tracking, regulatory compliance, and risk management)
Collaboration & Problem-Solving
- Provide expert technical guidance to colleagues, clients, and contractors
- Coordinate with third parties, such as contractors, suppliers, and local authorities, to deploy and integrate new assets
- Participate in system upgrades, technology enhancements, and commissioning, ensuring seamless integration
Lone Working & Flexibility
- Perform duties as a lone worker, maintaining strict adherence to safety standards
- Voluntarily undertake night work when required
Requirements
Essential
✔holding a full UK driving licence ✔level of familiarity with highway communication and electrical assets ✔planning, organisational, and time-management skills ✔ability to work independently and as part of a team ✔excellent problem-solving abilities ✔basic IT literacy (adaptable to specific systems) ✔self-motivation and initiative in finding solutions
Desirable
🔹electrical or engineering qualification (relevant to highways or infrastructure) 🔹prior experience in highways technology or related sector 🔹familiarity with 2391 Test and Inspection protocols / 18th Edition Wiring Regulations
