The Position: Field Expert Technician (Comms)

You’ll be a field-based technician performing specialist services on Communications and SCADA systems for battery storage and solar PV plants.

  • Part of a dedicated team supporting MV-scale power plants
  • On-site intervention for external asset owners (when supported by business needs)
  • Embracing a permanent role with overtime flexibility

Key Accountabilities

Technical Support

  • Remote troubleshooting and on-site assistance for faults in Communications and SCADA systems
  • Collaborate with O&M teams for corrective and preventive maintenance

Knowledge Hub Contribution

  • Update the internal knowledge base for comms/SCADA systems
  • Share insights across the wider team

Method Statements & Process Improvement

  • Develop method statements in collaboration with:
    • Operations Manager
    • HSQE Team
    • Comms/SCADA Specialists

Training & Upskilling

  • Identify and propose relevant training courses to strengthen team skills

Equipment & System upgrades

  • Propose upgrades for long-term system reliability, considering obsolescence

Cross-Team Collaboration

  • Support the Performance Analysts and SMART team in:
    • Developing API connections for new sites
  • Perform other allied duties as required by business needs

Required Knowledge & Skills

Essential Technical Knowledge

✔ Solar PV technology ✔ Central inverter expertise (commissioning and fault diagnosis) ✔ Technical fluency in:

  • AC/DC utility-scale solar farm systems
  • SCADA instrumentation and communications networks

✚ Desirable:

  • HVAC, fire protection, and security systems expertise

Desirable Knowledge

✚ Education or training on battery storage technology (onsite training available)


Critical Skills

  • Strong safe working practices
  • Fluent written and spoken English (correspondence reports, on-site discussions)
  • Ability to adapt to shifting priorities and emergent challenges
  • Commitment to personal and professional development
  • Proficiency in reading schematics and interpreting technical manuals
  • Computer-literate for reporting, emails, and data management

Required Experience

Technical Experience

  • Reading, writing, and amending Risk Assessments and Method Statements
  • Fault diagnosis using equipment vendor support
  • Installation, fault-finding, testing and commissioning
    • Preference for experience with MV/LV systems
  • Remote working and on-site [DABTX] flexibility
  • Portfolio O&M roles in [MW-scale solar PV] and [battery storage]

✚ Desirable (when available):

  • Installing or maintaining fiber optic/ethernet comms systems
  • Working with SCADA/data monitoring systems
  • Central inverter experience
  • Interaction with HV switchgear (safe and practical level)

Qualifications & Certifications

Mandatory

  • Valid UK driver’s license
  • Qualified Electrician in line with:
    • 2391 (Inspection & Testing L1/L2 or L2/L3)
    • 2394/2395 certification preferred
  • Health and Safety compliance documented through:
    • IOSH: Managing Safely
    • STMSTS qualification

--- ○ (Recommended for Comms/SCADA roles, preferred long-term):

  • Battery/Storage installer certification or equivalent training
