Salary Range: £37,318 – £47,000
Leonardo UK operates a grade-based salary framework with broad bands. The salary range reflects the approved grade band for this role, or a narrower hiring range, benchmarked against the external market. Exceptions above standard range are managed to protect internal equity.
About the Role
As a Mission Systems Field Service Engineer at Leonardo UK, you will play a critical role in supporting cutting-edge communication and mission systems used across UK and international defence platforms. You will provide technical expertise to customers both domestically and abroad, ensuring systems remain reliable, effective, and mission-ready throughout their lifecycle. Key responsibilities include collaboration with Engineering, Programme, Customer Support, and In-Service Support teams, acting as the front-line technical representative for Leonardo’s Mission Systems portfolio.
This hybrid position, based in Basildon, requires regular travel to customer sites, MoD establishments, trials locations, and deployed environments—often in international settings.
Key Impact Areas
This role is more than just technical support—it’s about delivering advanced technology and direct backing for front-line operations. Leonardo’s Mission Systems team is seeking a self-driven, independent, and collaborative professional capable of thriving in a close-knit, fast-paced environment.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Customer-facing support at remote UK and international locations, ensuring operational readiness.
- Remote troubleshooting for deployed military units.
- Overseeing integration, testing, and acceptance of systems.
- Developing technical and procedural documentation.
- Business development and customer liaison.
Your Responsibilities
You will:
- Support product development and in-service support, including troubleshooting, repairs, and upgrades.
- Own the integration, testing, and acceptance process for mission-critical systems.
- Design operational and support solutions, including written documentation.
- Provide on-site field support (UK and overseas for international customers).
- Remotely collaborate with deployed units through technical diagnostics.
- Contribute technical expertise to defence system operations, liaising with customers and Leonardo teams.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
