Field Service Engineer (Electrical Bias)

Location: Norwich

Salary: A GBP 30 to 60k basic + bonuses

Permanent, Full-Time

PPI supplies the power generation sector, including renewables, oil and gas, heavy industry, mining, and defence, providing high-technology support and solutions for rotating electrical machines, control and protection systems, and power electronics.

Job Summary

Due to a growing pipeline of work, we are seeking an experienced Field Service Engineer with an electrical bias and practical mechanical awareness to join our service team, based at our Norwich facility.

The role involves representing the company on customer sites, carrying out inspection, installation, fault finding, testing, commissioning, and support activities on motors, generators, and associated auxiliary systems. The successful candidate will also support generator test bed activities at the Norwich facility when required, including preparation, set-up, testing, inspection, data recording, and post-test checks.

Full experience across every area is not essential. Candidates with strong electrical field service experience, a practical hands-on approach, and a willingness to develop mechanical inspection, commissioning, and test bed skills are encouraged. Training can be provided as required.

You will be expected to produce clear and accurate end-of-job reports, test records, and technical documentation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and prepare scopes, documentation, reports, and work packs for upcoming service activities.
  • Carry out inspection, installation, testing, commissioning, and handover of equipment to customers.
  • Support generator test bed activities at the Norwich facility, including preparation, set-up, inspection, testing, data recording, and post-test checks.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical and mechanical faults on rotating electrical machines and associated systems.
  • Assist with mechanical dismantling, inspection, and reassembly of motors, generators, and associated rotating equipment.
  • Support bearing inspection activities, including visual inspection, clearance checks, seal inspection, and reporting of findings.
  • Assist with machine alignment, coupling checks, and general mechanical inspection activities.
  • Work with engineering, test bed, and workshop teams to support strip, repair, rebuild, and commissioning activities.
  • Ensure compliance with site-specific HSE requirements and company safety procedures.
  • Provide technical support to customers on-site, remotely, and internally.
  • Maintain accurate service reports, test records, and technical documentation.

Qualifications And Education

  • Recognised electrical or electromechanical apprenticeship, NVQ Level 3, City and Guilds, HNC/HND, or equivalent relevant experience in rotating equipment, power systems, or industrial electrical systems. HNC/HND is advantageous but not essential.
  • Knowledge of rotating electrical machines and associated equipment.
  • Valid offshore survival certificate (BOSIET/HUET) is advantageous.

Experience

  • Experience in electrical or electromechanical field service, ideally involving rotating equipment, power distribution equipment, or industrial electrical systems.
  • Electrical bias preferred, with practical mechanical awareness of rotating electrical machines.
  • Experience working in oil and gas, power generation, renewables, defence, marine, or heavy industry would be advantageous.
  • Technical knowledge of MV/LV systems, rotating equipment, diagnostics, testing tools, and field service practices.
  • Experience with condition monitoring or diagnostic.
