Field Support Engineer – Defence Technology (Drone Detection Systems)
Our client is a defence technology organisation, specialising in advanced AI-driven drone detection systems integrating:
- RADAR
- RF (radio frequency)
- Optical & sensor technologies
Operating across aviation, utilities, events, and leisure markets, this role offers diverse, high-impact field assignments.
About the Role
This Field Support Engineer will be on-the-ground, responsible for:
- Installing and configuring complex, multi-system environments
- Performing diagnostics, troubleshooting, testing, and maintenance at customer sites globally
- Ensuring optimal performance of AI-driven detection systems in dynamic operational environments
Variety is inherent: no two deployments will be the same—working with aviation bodies, National Grid utilities, music festivals, or military bases.
Key Responsibilities

Installation & Commissioning
- Deploy integrated detection systems (RADAR, RF, sensors) on-site
- Configure networking and IP setups for seamless system integration

Technical Problem-Solving
- Diagnose and resolve electrical, mechanical, and software issues in integrated systems
- Debug RADAR, RF signal anomalies, or sensor malfunctions
- Conduct pre- and post-deployment testing for compliance and reliability

Customer Relationship Management
- Serve as the primary point of contact for customer requirements and callbacks
- Provide technical training on system operation and best practices
- Collaborate cross-functionally with sales, R&D, and customer support teams

Site Support
- Undertake international travel for deployments and maintenance
- Ensure compliance with operational security protocols (Scarlet Clearance eligibility required)
Requirements
Core Competencies
- Electrical & Mechanical Diagnostics: Effectively isolate faults in physical and embedded systems
- System Integration & Networking: Proficiency in IP network configuration, RF systems, and sensing technologies
- Technical Understanding: Familiarity with RADAR principles, RF technology, or sensor arrays
- Customer-Centric Skills: Strong emphasis on communication, site consultation, and technical consultancy
Professional Background
Our ideal candidate has experience ,=, either:
- Military/Defence Background with exposure to:
- Aviation or marine systems (radar, sensors, radio systems)
- Field-level maintenance for electronics and radar equipment
- Clearance-level security (previous clearance helpful, or ability to obtain an SC-substantial clearance) OR
- Civilian Technical Experience in:
- Defence or telecom systems integration
- RADAR, RF, or sensor calibration and trouble-shooting
- Work with AI-driven instrumentation systems (adaptive detection methods)

Soft Skills & Certification
- Willingness to Travel: Domestic and international assignments
- Safety & Compliance Awareness: Adherence to work-at-height, forklift, or radio licence certifications contingent on role
