I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
You will identify opportunities to streamline and automate financial activities, reducing manual effort, improving accuracy and increasing efficiency. This includes designing and implementing automated workflows, translating finance processes into scalable system-driven solutions, and supporting the ongoing development of management accounting, financial accounting and treasury processes.
The role will involve reviewing existing workflows, documenting processes, assessing improvement opportunities and delivering practical solutions that add measurable value. You will also support the wider finance team with reporting templates, management and treasury reporting, budget preparation and audit activities, while helping to foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.
Collaboration is key to success in this role. You will work with colleagues across Finance and the wider business to deliver cross-functional automation initiatives, share knowledge and promote best practice. You will also keep up to date with emerging technologies and recommend new tools and approaches that could benefit the organisation.
In addition, you will provide support and cover for other members of the Finance team as required and undertake any other duties that are reasonably necessary to support the objectives of the role and the wider business.
About You
You are a proactive and analytically minded finance professional with a strong interest in technology, automation and continuous improvement. You enjoy solving problems, challenging existing ways of working and identifying opportunities to make processes more efficient, accurate and scalable.
You will have a solid understanding of core finance principles, including profit and loss, balance sheet, cash flow and reconciliations, and be able to apply this knowledge to interpret financial information, identify issues and support effective decision-making. Experience within project-based or long-term contract environments would be advantageous, along with an understanding of how finance processes translate into meaningful reporting and system design.

You will be comfortable working with financial reporting, management accounts, audit activities and data analysis, with the confidence to investigate issues, challenge outputs and drive improvements. Ideally, you will have experience using digital tools to automate processes and enhance productivity, including Microsoft Power Platform (Power Automate and Power Apps), Microsoft 365 Copilot or similar AI technologies. However, for the right candidate, a willingness to learn and develop these skills is just as important.
To be successful in this role, you will be able to build positive working relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation and communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing. You will be adaptable, organised and able to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment, while maintaining professionalism, discretion and a high level of confidentiality.
Most importantly, you will be a collaborative team player with a positive, can-do attitude, a passion for continuous improvement and a genuine enthusiasm for helping Finance embrace new technologies and ways of working.
