Why this role matters

At Calvary Mater Newcastle, Finance is more than reporting numbers. We partner with clinicians and operational leaders to improve services, support strategic decisions and ensure the financial sustainability of one of NSW's leading tertiary hospitals.

As our Finance Analyst - Performance & Planning, you will combine accounting, financial analysis and business planning to help leaders understand performance, identify opportunities and make evidence-based decisions.

Your day

  • Lead month-end and year-end processes including processing journals, accruals, reconciliations and reporting.
  • Prepare budgets, forecasts, workforce models and long-term financial plans.
  • Deliver executive dashboards, variance analysis and meaningful financial commentary.
  • Partner with managers and clinicians to explain results and support operational decision-making.
  • Prepare business cases, option papers and financial models.
  • Improve reporting using Technology One, Adaptive Planning, Office Connect, Excel, Power Query and Power BI.
  • Support audits, annual reporting, insurance returns and continuous improvement initiatives.

About you

  • A formal accounting qualification in the form of a Bachelor degree (or equivalent) from a recognised tertiary institution or a bachelor’s degree in any other disciplines (e.g. Economics, Health, Commerce, etc.), or relevant and substantial experience in financial and management accounting or financial analysis and reporting.
  • Detailed understanding of accounting theory, including performance reporting, budget and forecast development, and the principles governing budget maintenance and reporting of results against approved budgets in a complex organisation.
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing, analysing and presenting high-quality management and financial reports that are an accurate and complete representation of organisational performance and suitable for executive and operational decision making.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
