Job Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to join our operational finance team. This hands-on Finance Assistant role provides an excellent entry point for individuals aiming to enter accounting and finance.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities

Cash & Reconciliation
- Support the Cash Team in processing cash transactions on time
- Work closely with Account Payable (AP) in resolving invoicing queries

Functional Support
- Assist in preparing monthly and yearly financial reports
- Collaborate with Accounts Receivable (AR), Treasury, and other operational finance teams to ensure seamless financial operations

Transactional Work
- Raise sales invoices, requisitions, and customer/supplier documentation
- Verify and maintain records for patient valuables and funds

- Team Contributions
- Reporting directly to the Senior Financial Accountant
- Act as a key member of the financial accounting team alongside our Dependant Chief Cashier
- Use intermediate Excel skills (formulas and pivot tables) to manipulate data
Location & Working Hours
- On-site at Southampton General Hospital (Mondays to Fridays, 08:00–16:00)
- Requires mandatory attendance on wards daily

Person Specification
Qualifications
- Essential
- Enrolment in/in attainment of AAT Level 3 apprenticeship
- GCSEs (grades 9-5, A-C) in Mathematics/English* or equivalent
- Basic knowledge of finance systems (VAT, petty cash)
Skills & Experience
- Preferable but not essential
- Previous experience in clerical, finance, or customer service roles
Key Competencies
- Data entry & analysis
- Advanced IT & MS Office usage
- Efficiency under pressure
- Proficiency in English, attention to detail
- Problem-solving & initiative
