Finance Assistant – Wade Construction Management Consultants

About the Role

The Finance Assistant will support the finance department at Wade Construction Management Consultants, a leader in high-profile pharmaceutical and life sciences construction projects. This full-time position, based in our Head Office in Darlington, Co Durham, requires managing daily accounting tasks, ensuring compliance, and supporting financial operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage supplier and contractor invoices and expenses from receipt to approval and payment
  • Create monthly payment applications for clients and raise invoices on client systems
  • Run aged debtors reports and actively chase outstanding balances
  • Assist with monthly reconciliations of control accounts, bank, and other financial accounts
  • Support payroll processing and maintain accurate employee expense records
  • Prepare and maintain financial documents and spreadsheets, including reports, forecasts, and compliance records
  • Respond to supplier and client queries regarding payments and accounts
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure accurate cost tracking and budget control
  • Support the finance team during audits and month/year-end close

About You

Qualifications (Preferred)

  • Diploma or Degree in:
    • Accounting
    • Finance
    • Business Administration
    • A related financial field
  • Preferred Certification (not essential): ACCA, CIMA, CPA, or equivalent

Experience

  • Past experience in an Accounts Assistant, Finance Assistant, or similar role
  • Familiarity with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero, Sage, SAP, NetSuite)
  • Understanding of bookkeeping and financial principles

Essential Skills

  • Strong numerical and data entry skills
  • Proficiency in double-entry bookkeeping and financial reconciliations
  • Excellent organisational skills, able to prioritise efficiently
  • High attention to detail with compliance focus
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (including complex functions)
  • Strong verbal and written communication
  • Problem-solving ability to query costs/charges
  • Confidentiality and handling of sensitive data

Person Specification (Breakdown)

Qualifications

  • Essential:
    • AAT Level 3-4 Qualification (equivalent accepted)
  • Desirable:
    • ACCA, CIMA, CPA, or equivalent coursework

Experience

  • Essential:
    • Experience in a finance/accounting role
    • Proficiency in Sage, Xero, QuickBooks or similar software
  • Desirable:
    • Prior experience in a UK finance team

Knowledge

  • Essential:
    • Understanding of financial processes (invoicing, purchase orders, reconciliations)
    • Solid Microsoft Excel proficiency
  • Desirable:
    • Familiarity with UK financial regulations (e.g., IFRS)
    • Awareness of month-end closing processes

Soft Skills

  • Essential:
    • Confidentiality focus (ability to handle sensitive information)
    • Clear communication (written and verbal)
