Chair – Finance Committee (The Third Age Project)
The aim of our charity is to improve the quality of life and wellbeing of older people, particularly those who struggle to access mainstream or other older people’s services. The Third Age Project (TAP) is hiring for a Chair of our Finance Committee to help us achieve these goals.
What Difference Will You Make?
Trustees play a crucial role in enabling the charity to develop and grow to meet the needs of the community. Your skills will support TAP’s strategic goals and operational success.
What Are We Looking For?
Experience and Skills Required
- Personality Traits – Essential
- Strong and visible commitment to the charity’s strategic objectives and its cause
- Excellent inter-personal skills and ability to build strong relationships
- Tact, diplomacy, and effective listening to facilitate collaboration
- Ability to create and maintain a collaborative team environment
- Willingness to commit sufficient time: board meetings every 2 months (half-day annual strategy days)

Professional Experience – Required
- Proven experience operating at a strategic organisational level
- Demonstrated empathy throughout their career
- Strong appreciation of *charity governance principles and practices
* Not mandatory, but highly desirable.
Hybrid Role (Flexible Working)
What Will You Be Doing?
The Chair of TAP’s Finance Sub-Committee (part of the Board of Trustees) will:
- Lead the Finance Sub-Committee in reviewing the charity’s financial health
- Support the General Manager in maintaining oversight of the charity’s financial governance, compliance, stability, and reporting
- Ensure accountability and strong corporate governance practices are upheld
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Guide the charity to maximum benefit for beneficiaries
- Ensure compliance with governance requirements and charitable objectives
- Set a clear strategic direction
- Risk management: Regularly review major risks and opportunities, ensuring mitigating systems are in place
- Maintain the charity’s sound financial health and financial accountability

Governance
- Optimise governance arrangements for effectiveness
- Facilitate constructive board dynamics and address conflicts
- Ensure the Board reflects diverse skills, knowledge, and experience
- Regular (agreed) policy compliance
Relationship with Management
- Build a strong, supportive partnership with the General Manager
- Hold management accountable without overstepping boundaries
- Stay informed and provide support on charity affairs
