The Role
If you’re a Certified Accountant (for example a member of CIPFA, CIMA, ACCA or equivalent) with experience of managing a finance team, and you’re looking for a role where your skills can really make a difference to more than just the bottom line, this could be the role for you.
As Finance Lead, Corporate Finance and Governance, you will be part of the Finance Senior Management Team responsible for delivering all aspects of a dynamic and efficient Finance Department, supporting the planning and management of the Force’s strategic financial plans. It’ll be a fast-paced role that requires both financial accounting and management accounting skills. Your team will be primarily responsible for the preparation of the annual statements of account for the Police and Crime Commissioner and Chief Constable, treasury management services and the annual medium term financial planning process.
The force has recently developed a more agile and smarter approach to service delivery, recognising there are a number of roles that can be performed effectively in the home environment, enabling greater productivity and improved work-life balance.
This role has been assigned an ‘agile’ persona which means that you will be able to work flexibly at a force location or at home. The assigned ‘team zone’ location for the role is Forth Banks Police Station, Newcastle City Centre. The team currently work together 1 day per week in the office but there is the option, and sometimes the requirement, to work other days and/or from different sites.
What you’ll do
The key elements of the role include:
- Managing the welfare, recruitment, appraisal, development and discipline of the Corporate Finance and Governance Team; ensuring that learning and development needs are identified, delivered and supported.
- Leading on the year end closedown timetable and delivering the annual statements of account for the Chief Constable and Police and Crime Commissioner, including Whole of Government Accounts (WGA).
- Statutory, legislative and Home Office reporting.
- Monitoring and forecasting for the Police Pension Fund.
- Delivering the finance services provided to the Northeast Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU).
- Managing the Treasury Management service for the Force.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
