Sheffield Young Carers is a local charity that supports young carers and young people affected by drug and alcohol issues within their families across Sheffield. The organization is committed to ensuring young carers are recognized for their responsibilities and have equal opportunities and life chances as their peers. Sheffield Young Carers provides practical, emotional, and advocacy support to young people and their families, helping them navigate complex caring roles. The charity actively champions young carers’ rights and works to ensure their voices and opinions influence services and wider decision-making.

Role Description

The Finance Manager is a part-time role based in Sheffield with a hybrid working arrangement, combining office-based work with some flexibility to work from home. The role is responsible for day-to-day financial management, including maintaining accurate financial records, managing budgets and forecasts, monitoring cash flow, and preparing management accounts and financial reports for the leadership team and trustees. The Finance Manager will oversee financial controls and systems, ensure compliance with relevant charity finance regulations and funder requirements, and support the preparation of statutory accounts and audit processes. The role will also involve supporting funding applications with financial information, monitoring grant income and expenditure, advising on financial risk, and working closely with senior managers to ensure resources are used effectively to support young carers and their families.

As the Finance Manager, you will lead on;

  • Financial management and reporting of the charity, working with the Co-CEOs.
  • Ensure strong financial controls and accurate reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.

Your main duties will include;

  • Manage and develop accurate financial procedures and recording systems, including using QuickBooks, to meet the requirements of a variety of funders in conjunction with the Co-CEOs, Fundraising and Monitoring Manager, and trustees.
  • Liaise with SYC’s treasurer regarding financial management of the charity.
  • Prepare and update annual budgets, in conjunction with the Co-CEOs and treasurer.
  • Prepare and present financial reports for the Management and Leadership team and Treasurer.
  • Provide SYC’s external accountants with all financial documentation and information which they require to prepare the annual accounts and to undertake an Independent Examination of them.
  • Update Reserves Policy annually, in conjunction with the Co-CEOs and trustees.
  • Undertake management of the accounts including bank reconciliations, invoicing, petty cash, payroll, pensions and expenses.
  • Ensure financial procedures and controls, as set out in SYC’s Financial Procedures document are followed.
  • Maintain organised financial documentation and audit trail.
  • Support the continuous improvement of financial systems and processes.
  • Stay informed of changes in charity accounting standards and applicable laws and regulations.

General Duties

  • To work closely with SYC’s staff, trustees, and service users, to maintain good knowledge of SYC’s work and the young people and families we support.
  • To work as part of a team and participate in regular supervision meetings, team meetings, and training.
  • To contribute to service evaluation and the overall development of SYC.
  • To work in accordance with the policies of SYC, including our safeguarding children and vulnerable adult procedures; our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy; and our confidentiality framework.
  • To contribute to the organisation’s positive public profile and carry out all duties in a professional and polite manner in line with SYC’s Competency Framework.
  • To evidence SYC’s values at all times, which underpin SYC’s vision of ‘working with young people to make a difference for life’.
