Interim Finance Officer – 3-Month Sickness Cover (Extensible) | Ember
About the Role
Ember, a fully remote and globally-focused nonprofit, is seeking a 3-month sickness cover (with the possibility to extend) in our finance team. This role will support financial management, reporting, and compliance while contributing to our mission of advancing the global energy transition. Candidates must demonstrate expertise in UK accounting standards, nonprofit financial management, and the ability to collaborate in an international, dynamic team.
Responsibilities
During this interim period, the Financial Officer will ensure the organisation’s long-term financial stability through the following key functions:
- Month-end closing and payment processes
- Grant reporting
- Internal grant allocation
- Cash flow management
- Treasury administration
- Compliance with regulatory requirements
- Budgeting and budget control
Core Duties
- Financial Management: Oversee cash flow, manage accounting/payment/treasury operations, and ensure financial accuracy.
- Reporting: Prepare financial statements, management reports, grant reports, and compliance documents in collaboration with our external bookkeeper.
- Compliance: Uphold adherence to relevant laws and professional standards.
- Collaboration: Align with other departments on team-based budgets and organisational goals.

About Ember
Ember is an independent not-for-profit energy think tank accelerating the clean energy transition through policy and data. Our work focuses on:
- Aggregating and analysing data on power sector emissions and coal mine methane leaks.
- Improving energy and climate policy based on evidence.
Requirements
Essential
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field – coupled with a professional certification (e.g., ACA, ACCA, CIMA).
- Minimum 3 years of fintech/finance experience across at least two different UK-headquartered non-profits, including financial reporting for grant funding and internal grant allocation.
- Passionate commitment to the climate movement or energy transition.
- Fluent in spoken and written English ( кат. English required).
Nice to Have
- Experience with AI-powered financial tools.
- Hands-on Profit & Loss (P&L) management and budgeting processes.
- Familiarity with Xero software.
- Proficiency in Google Suite (particularly Google Sheets).
- Additional language skills (e.g., Asian languages, Spanish).

Benefits
Compensation & Structure
- Salary: £5,000–£5,417/month (equivalent to £60,000–£65,000 FTE p.a.).
- Contract: 3-month fixed-term, extendable. Working hours flexible between 60% part-time and full-time (100%).
- Location: Remote (UK-based applicants preferred).
