Full-time, 41 hours per week – Hybrid (minimum 2 days on-site in Bloomsbury, London) 12-month fixed term contract – £71,695 per annum Application deadline: 16 July 2026
About the Role
The British Museum is seeking an experienced and commercially minded Finance Manager to lead the delivery of high-quality financial management, strategic planning, and management information services across the organisation.
Reporting to the Head of Finance, you will:
- Lead a team of finance professionals
- Shape financial strategy and robust financial controls
- Support organisational decision-making
- Act as the Museum’s authority on accounting, compliance, and financial reporting
- Drive continuous improvement across systems, processes, and performance management
About You
Essential Requirements
- ACA-qualified (or equivalent) with strong technical knowledge of:
- Accounting standards
- Financial reporting
- Audit
- Tax, VAT, and regulatory compliance
- Proven experience in:
- Managing financial operations in a complex organisation
- Delivering high-quality financial management, reporting, and strategic support
- Leading financial process, system, and control improvements with an emphasis on efficiency, compliance, and best practice
- Exceptional people leadership skills, including:
- Managing and developing high-performing teams
- Fostering a culture of continuous improvement
- Ability to:
- Clearly communicate complex financial information to stakeholders at all levels
- Solve problems, manage competing priorities, and meet challenging deadlines

Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Service Delivery
- Lead, motivate, and develop the Management Accountants team and Planning & Management Information Coordinator
- Ensure a high-quality finance service is delivered across the Museum
Financial & Strategic Oversight
- Oversee management accounts, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting
- Provide accurate and insightful financial information to support strategic decision-making
Compliance & Audit
- Lead the annual audit process and year-end reporting
- Act as the primary point of contact for external auditors
- Ensure all statutory reporting obligations are met
Process & Control Improvement
- Drive continuous improvement in financial processes, controls, and systems
- Identify opportunities to enhance efficiency, governance, and compliance
Expert Financial Advisory
- Provide strategic and operational financial advice on:
- Accounting matters
- Tax and regulatory compliance
- Major Museum projects and initiatives
Strategic Planning & Performance
- Support the development and delivery of Museum-wide strategy, operating plans, and performance reporting
- Embed financial considerations into long-term planning and organisational priorities
The Masterplan: British Museum’s Transformation
The Museum is undertaking its biggest transformation since its founding almost 300 years ago. This includes:
- Large-scale building and gallery transformation
- New ways of connecting with audiences
- Enhancements to internal operations
