Role: Full-time (41 hours per week) Location: Hybrid (minimum 2 days on-site in Bloomsbury, London) Contract: 12-month fixed term Salary: £71,695 per annum Deadline: 16 July 2026
About The Role
The British Museum seeks an experienced, commercially minded Finance Manager: Accounts & Strategy to deliver exceptional financial leadership, strategic planning, and management reporting.
Reporting to the Head of Finance, this role involves leading a finance team, shaping financial strategy, ensuring strong controls, and supporting decision-making. The successful candidate will serve as the Museum’s authoritative voice on accounting, compliance, and financial reporting while championing continuous improvement in systems, processes, and performance.
About You
We are looking for an ACA-qualified (or equivalent) professional with:
- In-depth expertise in accounting standards, financial reporting, audit, tax, VAT, and regulatory compliance.
- Proven experience in complex organisations, delivering high-calibre finance management, reporting, and strategic support.
- Strong leadership skills, with experience developing high-performing teams and fostering continuous improvement.
- Process-driven mindset, skilled in refining systems and controls for efficiency, compliance, and best practice.
- Clear communication, able to simplify complex financial matters for stakeholders at all levels.
- Exceptional organisational skills and adaptability, balancing priorities, solving challenges, and meeting tight deadlines.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop the Management Accountants team and Planning & Management Information Coordinator to deliver a high-quality finance service.
- Oversee management accounts, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting, ensuring accurate, insightful decision-making tools.
- Manage the annual audit and year-end reporting, acting as primary liaison with external auditors and ensuring compliance with statutory requirements.
- Drive continuous process improvement—optimising controls, systems, and governance for efficiency.
- Provide expert financial guidance on accounting, tax, regulatory matters, and major projects.
- Support Museum-wide strategy and operating plans, embedding financial considerations into long-term planning.
