Background
We are seeking a proactive Tax focused individual to join the team. This role sits within the Financial Accounting, Tax, and Treasury team in the University’s Finance Directorate. The team is responsible for financial reporting and statutory accounts, ensuring compliance with tax, audit, and regulatory requirements, supporting corporate financial planning and balance sheet management, overseeing treasury activities including cash forecasting and covenant compliance, and maintaining financial oversight of university subsidiaries and investments in spin-out companies.
Responsibilities
The Financial Accountant – Tax provides specialist financial accounting support across key administrative functions. Responsibilities include:
- Full tax administration for university group entities, covering VAT, Gift Aid, and Corporation Tax, including reporting, submissions, query handling, advisory liaison, systems reviews, and compliance activities such as Capital Goods Scheme, PESM reviews, and Customs and Excise duties across jurisdictions.
- Management of reporting and tax compliance for at least one subsidiary.
- Support for wider financial accounting activities.
- Assistance with month-end and year-end processes, audits.
- Provision of cover within the finance team.

Person Specification
- A degree-educated (or equivalent experience) qualified accountant with proven experience.
- Strong knowledge of financial systems and procedures within higher education or similar complex environments, with an understanding of governance, compliance, and data protection frameworks.
- The candidate may be working towards tax qualifications (e.g., CTA), with proven experience in delivering full tax administration, including VAT, Gift Aid, Corporation Tax, reporting, submissions, advisory liaison, and compliance processes.
- Demonstrates strong experience across financial accounting, tax, and treasury functions, providing accurate information to stakeholders in a complex organization.
