Financial Controller – Fixed-Term Contract
Location: London (independent law firm)
A well-regarded independent London law firm is seeking an experienced Financial Controller to join its finance team on a 12-month fixed-term contract.
You’ll work closely with the Finance Director and Commercial Financial Controller, playing a critical role in cashiering, reporting, revenue, and financial compliance. This role offers broad ownership, scope to strengthen controls, reporting, and processes, and a culture that encourages innovation, automation, and systems-driven improvements.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with HMRC legislation and the Solicitors’ Accounts Rules (SAR) in collaboration with the Client Account Compliance Officer (COFA)
- Drive lock-up through Work-in-Progress (WIP) management, billing, and collections
- Review and approve office and client account payments
- Support the year-end financial audit and SAR compliance audit
- Maintain robust financial controls, policies, and accounting records, while managing financial risk
- Oversee and enhance internal and external reporting, providing tailored management information for decision-making
- Analyse and model new financial initiatives, proposals, and scenarios
- Design and deliver best-practice finance training for fee earners (including partners)
- Collaborate with the Financial Systems Manager and IT to automate processes and develop the firm’s practice management system

Key Requirements
- Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, or CIMA) with at least 5 years’ post-qualification experience (PQE)
- 2+ years’ experience as a Financial Controller, preferably within the legal sector (desirable but not mandatory)
- Strong understanding of the Solicitors’ Accounts Rules (SAR)
- Sound knowledge of VAT and partnership taxation
- Proven leadership experience in managing and developing finance teams
- Advanced Excel skills, with SQL and Power BI being an advantage
- Experience with Elite 3E (beneficial)
- Exceptional attention to detail, particularly in financial statement preparation and audit management
