About Amber Labs
At Amber Labs, we are a cutting-edge UK and European technology consultancy that prioritises empowering autonomy, promoting experimentation, and facilitating rapid learning to provide exceptional value to our clients. Our company culture is centred around collaboration, where all colleagues—regardless of their role—work together to minimise risk and shorten delivery times. Our team consists of highly-skilled cross-functional consultants, analysts, and support staff.
The Role
Amber Labs is at an exciting stage of growth, and we are seeking a financial controller [or step-up financial manager] to manage financial accounting and compliance while driving improvements in reporting, control, and efficiency. Reporting to the Head of Finance, this is a "hands-on" role with responsabilidad spanning from:
- End-to-end financial closing
- Leading the year-end audit
- End-to-end payroll management
- Delivery of timely, accurate management accounts for internal and external parties
The role sits within a small team, with no current direct reports (as the finance operations manager also reports to the Head of Finance). The ideal candidate will proactively address the needs of a fast-moving tech business, embodying a customer-centric and AI-driven mindset to enhance workflows.
Responsibilities
- Lead the end-to-end accounting function, ensuring accuracy and compliance with financial regulations.
- Accelerate the month-end close procedure from 10 days to 2-3 days.
- Lead the year-end audit process for the financial year ending August 2026.
- Support the R&D tax credit process.
- Run the end-to-end payroll process, collaborating with HR, Operations, and an outsourced payroll bureau.
- Ensure HMRC compliance for VAT, PAYE, and payroll returns.
- Provide the management team with a monthly management information pack, including:
- The three financial statements
- Variance analysis
- Commentary on key movements, risks, opportunities, and exceptional items
- Support the finance ops manager in:
- Continuous improvements to controls, cross-functional processes, data storage, and reporting.
- Utilising AI to enhance controls, efficiencies, and reporting in the finance function.
- Research, validate, and make recommendations for accounting software that aligns with Amber Labs' size, scale, trajectory, and business needs.
- Manage lender reporting and covenants.
- Collaborate closely with the Head of Finance in refinancing initiatives and data room management.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
