Financial Controller
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and commercially minded Financial Controller to join our growing construction company. This is a key role within a Managing Director-led business, responsible for overseeing the day-to-day finance function while providing accurate financial reporting, cash flow management, and commercial insight to support business growth.
Working closely with the Founder and Accountant, you will take ownership of financial operations across all construction projects and broader business activities. You will ensure financial controls are in place, maintain accurate financial information, and provide meaningful reporting that supports effective decision-making. This role offers the opportunity to become a key member of the leadership team.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Prepare monthly management accounts and financial performance reports.
- Produce project-specific financial reporting, including cost tracking and profitability analysis.
- Monitor financial performance against budgets and forecasts, identifying risks and opportunities.
- Prepare cash flow forecasts and oversee cash management across multiple projects and entities.
Financial Control & Compliance
- Develop, maintain, and improve financial controls, systems, and processes.
- Ensure accurate and timely recording of all financial transactions.
- Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable.
- Manage month-end close processes.
- Prepare and review VAT returns, CIS reporting, and other statutory requirements.
- Coordinate with the accountant on year-end accounts, corporation tax, and audit requirements.
- Ensure compliance with relevant financial regulations and reporting obligations.

Leadership & Process Improvement
- Act as the primary finance contact within the business.
- Support the Founder and senior leadership team with financial planning and decision-making.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reporting quality, and financial controls.
- Assist with the implementation and optimization of financial systems and processes.
About You
- Qualified or experienced finance professional who combines strong technical accounting skills with commercial awareness.
- Taking ownership, improving processes, and helping business leaders make informed decisions through clear and accurate financial information.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to work independently in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment. You are comfortable working closely with business owners and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
- Most importantly, you are proactive, commercially aware, and motivated by the opportunity to play a significant role in the growth of a successful construction company.

Skills & Experience
- Minimum 10 years' experience in finance, accounting, or financial control roles.
- Strong experience in preparing management accounts and financial reporting.
- Excellent understanding of financial controls, budgeting, and cash flow management.
- Experience overseeing transactional finance processes, including purchase and sales ledgers.
- Strong knowledge of VAT, CIS, and UK financial compliance requirements.
- Advanced Excel skills and experience using Sage.
- Experience in preparing forecasts, budgets, and financial analysis.
- Ability to communicate financial information clearly.
- Experience within the construction sector or similar field.
- ACCA, CIMA, ACA, or equivalent qualification preferred; however, candidates with equivalent experience will also be considered.
