Reports To: General Manager / Functional Responsibility to Finance Director

Location: ABP Linden Burradon, Tyne and Wear, NE23 7NB

Role Overview:

The Financial Controller is a key member of the management team, responsible for overseeing all financial and accounting functions. This role involves managing the finance team, ensuring accurate financial reporting, and implementing financial controls. The Financial Controller will work closely with senior management to set strategic direction and achieve financial objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Management:

  • Oversee the preparation of weekly, monthly, and annual financial and management accounts with detailed balance sheet reconciliations
  • Ensure compliance with statutory requirements and accounting standards
  • Manage the budgeting process and monitor financial performance against budgets
  • Conduct variance analysis and provide commentary on financial performance on a weekly, monthly, and annual basis
  • Ensure effective cash flow management and financial control

Team Leadership:

  • Provide leadership and management to the finance team, including performance management and training
  • Foster a positive and inclusive working environment

  • Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives

Reporting and Compliance:

  • Prepare and present financial reports to senior management and external stakeholders
  • Ensure timely and accurate submission of accounts and any regulatory returns where applicable (VAT Returns, PAYE/NI, Packaging etc)
  • Lead engagement with internal and external auditors and manage the annual audit process
  • Continuous review of internal controls and procedures to ensure adequate financial and non-financial checks and balances are in place to safeguard validity of the financial statements
  • Oversee all staff and expense payment processes ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely disbursements
  • Manage and drive the timely collection of cash from customers, maintaining strong credit control and supporting overall cash-flow performance

Commercial Support:

  • Provide financial insights and analysis to support business decisions
  • Evaluate new business proposals and prepare commercial pricing models
  • Support other departments in achieving financial objectives
  • Evaluate, monitor, and track capital expenditure projects

Person Specification:

  • Qualified Accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA) with a degree in a relevant field and maintain own CPD annually
  • Strong leadership and management skills
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and financial software
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with proven ability to liaise and direct across multiple departments
  • Proven experience in working to tight deadlines
