Assistant Vice President – Financial Crime Investigations

Investment Banking | Entry Level of Defence Compliance


Purpose of the Role

To provide data-led, expert oversight to check and challenge business and compliance matters, ensuring Barclays operates in alignment with legal, regulatory, and ethical responsibilities, with a specific focus on investment bank financial crime investigations across Trading and Securities Services.


Accountabilities (Primary Responsibilities)

1. Compliance Risk Identification & Governance

  • Conduct thorough reviews of business activities, changes, processes, systems, testing, and controls to identify and assess ongoing compliance risks
  • Investigate complex potential market abuse scenarios, including but not limited to:
    • Insider dealing
    • Unlawful disclosure
    • Market manipulation
    • Anti-competitive conduct
  • Manage and oversee full investigation cycles of compliance risk events or breaches, ensuring timeliness and thoroughness
  • Provide oversight of corrective actions and preventative measures, ensuring root-cause resolution and systemic improvements to prevent recurrence
  • Implement and ensure adherence to Barclays policies, procedures, and standards across regulatory regimes and jurisdictions

2. Financial Crime Investigations

  • Led financial crime investigations across Banking, Markets, and International Corporate Bank categories
  • Conduct manual due diligence and reviews, including investigations triggered by:
    • Negative media sources
    • Referrals from internal (HR, Frontline User Activity Monitoring) and external sources
    • Regulatory protocols and case flow management
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of investigative procedures, quality assurance frameworks, and risk-based methodologies
  • Ensure strict adherence to AMCME/July sets AMFL and Global Sanctions, internal policies, and industry standards
  • Use data analytics and emerging technologies to enhance oversight and detection
  • Collaborate closely with relevant descendant teams, board members, and risk management functions, ensuring a rigorous control framework
  • Manage escalated issues and discuss resolution recommendations with senior metrics in compliance

3. Policy Development & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Partner with commercial divisions to assess and mitigate compliance risks early in business development cycles
  • Promote a trust-based working culture with other internal functions (e.g., 1LOD Compliance, Legal, Risk) to drive a holistic compliance approach
  • Represent Barclays in compliance engagements, including public regulators and statutory inquiries
  • Physically engage with stakeholders (Managers, senior compliance reviewers, upward presentations) to negotiate and influence stakeholder requirements effectively

4. Process Coordination

  • Engage in cross-sections where team outputs feed into wider risk models or compliance reporting frameworks
  • Act as the client-facing contact for cross-functional risk activities, liaisons, or working groups where relevant
  • Ensure the strategic design and maintenance of the efficient defences against evolving financial crime threats

Requirements

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Relevant experience: Demonstrated ability in financial crime investigations, with either:
    • Regulatory investigations involving money laundering
    • Handling bribery/corruption and sanctions matters
  • Investment Banking & Market Knowledge: Profound understanding of products, services, and stock markets including:
    • Cash equities, derivatives (CFDs, FX, futures, options, swaps), March investment products exposure
    • 9+ types of permissions required for 'Trading Equities’, ‘Commodity Futures’, cashDX’
  • Analytical & Communication Skills: Strong communication (executive, written) and influencing capability with a diverse range of audiences, including senior non-executives. Ability to negotiate outcomes with business stakeholders
  • Inquisitiveness: Mindset for continuous learning within evolving risk environments

Business Acumen & Knowledge

  • Exposure to Barclays Compliance Services (compensation, governance policies), ways of working (case ownership), and experience elevated in escalated situations (e.g., potential insider trading, internal referrals) – value-add preferable
  • Expertise in assessing complex datasets (e.g., MIFID II trade surveillance), using dashboards and analytics
  • Practical understanding of trade surveillance systems, L3 IQFeed, pattern trading, tick-data analysis

Technical Competencies

  • Familiarity with financial transaction monitoring systems (Sentinel acq, Questionpoint) set and trigger repositories
  • Experience using beschuftigungsbronne (MIFID II MiCA requirements).

Location: Birmingham, Knutsford, London or Glasgow. Base Band: £56,500 - £57,500 depends on earnings/band impact. Further contributions may apply depending upon geographic location and tenure.*


Programme Detail Summary

Within the first four years, you will be expected to have obtained an active level of independence on your engagements – as a principal at the initial stage, to independently close files or determine escalation to relevant stakeholders by the end of your initial participation. The role will naturally enable development and application of decision-domain experiences (e.g., managing or supervising teams, asset/discourse workshops) and will help you develop progressively in areas such as stakeholder management and full-cycle case-tracking procedures.
