Role: Group Financial Director
Location: South Staffordshire (on-site)
Salary: c. £120-£140k + Benefits
FD Recruit is working exclusively with a privately owned specialist construction and plant hire group based in South Staffordshire, between Wolverhampton and Cannock, to appoint a Group Finance Director. The group has grown consistently year on year, with turnover now approaching £25M across multiple companies, and this appointment is a direct result of that growth. The owners have ambitious plans to go significantly further, and they want a finance leader alongside the CEO to shape and support that next phase.
Why this role
This is a group role in structure - multiple entities, consolidation, intercompany - but an SME in character. You will be the number one in finance, a member of the senior leadership team working closely with the CEO and the wider executive, responsible for everything from strategy at the boardroom table to the quality of the month-end close, without a larger group function behind you. For the right person, that breadth and ownership is precisely the appeal.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
You will:
- Partner an entrepreneurial CEO on group strategy, growth plans, and new business initiatives.
- Sit on the senior leadership team, working closely with the executive to turn ambition into deliverable plans.
- Modernise the finance function: faster month-end close, stronger controls, better Board reporting, and new technology where it adds value.
- Own the full group finance agenda: consolidated accounts, cash management, budgeting, intercompany, audit, and tax compliance.
- Drive commercial decision-making in an asset-intensive business, from fleet and plant investment to contract profitability.
- Lead and develop the finance team, building the capability to support a growing multi-entity group.

Who we're looking for
A qualified accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA) who has operated as the number one in finance within an SME or owner-managed business, and understands that dynamic: full responsibility, no group support function, nowhere to delegate the hard stuff.
- Comfortable working at pace alongside an entrepreneurial CEO - someone who can bring financial rigour and constructive challenge to ambitious growth plans without slowing them down.
- Experience across a group or multi-entity structure. Sector background is useful but not essential; what matters is the SME number one experience.
- A hands-on leader happy to move between boardroom strategy and the detail of the month-end.
How to Apply
This role is being managed exclusively by FD Recruit. If this sounds like your next move, we'd love to hear from you. Please apply with an up-to-date CV and a member of the team will be in touch.
