Finance Director - Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire

JSS are delighted to be partnering our client on the recruitment of a fantastic Finance Director opportunity. The Finance Director is a crucial strategic and operational role at the heart of the business, with full responsibility for all financial aspects of the company. The Finance Director will be responsible for analysing financial performance, advising the senior leadership team on the findings, and implementing recommendations to achieve the most profitable results for the business while optimising cash flow. The role suits someone who leads from the front and is happy to be close to the detail, supporting and covering for the team where needed.

Finance Director Role Responsibilities

  • Take full responsibility for the finance function, including Financial Control, Treasury, Tax, FP&A, Business Intelligence, and Shared Services.
  • Lead all financial planning and analysis (FP&A), including forecasting, budgeting, and cash flow management.
  • Identify, implement, and lead efficient financial and operational processes to support sustainable growth.
  • Own financial controls and reporting, including monthly Cognos submission of results and statutory accounts.
  • Own the month-end close timetable, year-end process, and audit preparation – reviewing, and where needed preparing, technical accounting, journals, and reconciliations.
  • Oversee relationships with external audit, internal audit, pension scheme trustees, and banks.
  • Manage working capital, including inventory, and own the rolling 13-week cash flow forecast.
  • Lead capital expenditure appraisal and asset management – building investment business cases and tracking machine-level returns across the estate.
  • Manage Group tax, VAT, transfer pricing, and intercompany and foreign-exchange exposures across the UK and Ireland.
  • Lead the monthly business review with the Group CEO and CFO, and with the UK Executive team.
  • Develop strategies to increase return on investment and profitability.

  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, or CIMA) with extensive finance leadership experience.
  • Proven experience within an SME and/or Private Equity-backed business.
  • Technically highly competent, with proven commercial acumen and a strong track record of business partnering.
  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills to drive informed decision-making.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to influence cross-functional teams and senior stakeholders.
  • A proven leader, able to inspire and develop a high-performing, collaborative finance team.
