Senior Financial Crime Compliance Specialist (2LoD)
Chip’s expanding financial crime function needs a growing specialist to evolve alongside our business.
About the Role
We’re seeking a ** seniormost second-line-of-defence (2LoD) expert** in financial crime compliance. You’ll be responsible for end-to-end compliance monitoring, enterprise-wide risk assessments, and ensuring robust financial crime controls across our growing wealth, savings, and investment product suite. This role is pivotal in shaping how we identify, assess, and mitigate risks while advising first-line teams.
Reporting directly to the MLRO / Head of Financial Crime Compliance, you’ll bring technical expertise, strong judgement, and collaborative agility to build a fortified control framework.
Responsibilities
Core Monitoring & Assurance
- Execute end-to-end Financial Crime Compliance Monitoring Plans, covering:
- AML (Anti-Money Laundering)
- Fraud
- Sanctions
- PEP (Politically Exposed Persons)
- Broad financial crime controls
- Includes scoping, fieldwork, control testing, reporting, issue tracking, and closure.
- Apply data analytics and AI-assisted tools to sharpen monitoring, improve efficiency, and enhance findings.
- Produce clear, evidence-based assurance reports for governance forums.
Risk & Control Leadership
- Contribute to Enterprise-Wide Risk Assessments (EWRA), assessing:
- Inherently risk inherent risk
- Control effectiveness
- Residual risk across products and customer base.
- Identify control gaps, propose improvements, and track remediation.
- Support horizon scanning, regulatory developments, and emerging financial crime typologies.
Operational Excellence
- Review and quality-assure internal Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) before MLRO escalation.
- Assist in handling Law Enforcement Agency (LEA) requests with accuracy and timeliness.
- Maintain meaningful management information (MI) on risks, controls, and monitoring outcomes.
- Draft financial crime risk sections for the MLRO’s Annual Report.

Requirements
Experience & Skills
✔ 5 years' financial crime experience, including half in a 2LoD role (or equivalent expertise). ✔ Proven hands-on experience in compliance monitoring, assurance, test methodology, and findings reporting. ✔ Direct exposure to day-to-day FC operations (e.g. SAR drafting, escalation decisions). ⚠️ Strong candidates with less experience may still be considered if they demonstrate depth in compliance and operations.
Desirable Industries:
- Retail savings, investment, or wealth management (especially with complex customer risk profiles).
Key Knowledge:
- UK Financial Crime regulatory framework (JMLSG, TMF, FCA, MOLE risks, MLRO responsibilities).
- KYC controls, PEP/sanctions screening, EDD obligations, and high-risk customer risk management.
- Enterprise risk assessment methodologies (inherent → residual risk).
Technical & Soft Skills:
- Excellent communication (articulating complex risks clearly).
- Strong MI/data skills (extracting insights, building management reports).
- Organised, self-directed – manages multiple workstreams with tight deadlines.
- Collaborative mindset – able to guide first-line teams with expert advisory.
- Technical comfort with AI/ML tools (willing to implement/testing innovative solutions).
Qualifications: ✅ ICA, CAMS, or equivalent is desirable but not essential (if experience is robust).
